Does anyone know if it's possible to buy a High Definition CRT TV in the UK? I've had a look, but had no luck.

JVC make a few CRT's that accept 1080i HD signals. As far as I know they're the only CRT's in the UK that give you this option.

Before you consider getting one, you might want to look at some recent threads on this forum regarding the performance of these sets when displaying anything other than dvd.

Be aware that the HD spec for the UK has yet to be confirmed.

So, if you're thinking of getting an HD TV now (with future-proofing in mind), then tread warily!

Out of interest why are you trying to buy HD TV in the UK (considering the near zero availability of HD content across Europe as a whole)?

I've got the JVC HP36P38SJE and it will display 480P,575P and 1080I. But the RGB freeview picture is pretty pants compared to a dvd picture. Mine has developed a light blue smudge just of the centre of the screen and mastercare are visiting tomorrow to inspect it.

Well apparently according to Digital Spy the EU have just confirmed the specs for HD TV in Europe. They have gone for 720p50. Here is the link to the article.

It would be a good start just to get freeview pictures nearer to DVD quality. No good having a 720p standard and then broadcast it at these pitiful bitrates.

Allthough the JVC will take a hd input it will downconvert this to its
native which I think is 576p so it would be pointless for hdtv/dvd

Because the Internet has plenty of HD movies available to download. I've played them on a 21.3" LCD and they're awesome. I was just wondering if there were any CRTs that displayed true HD.

However I think my original warning is still valid, as they are recommendations only, and particularly as Sky tend to do their own thing.

The only true HD displays are still computer monitors and it is unlikely that a television will ever have a precission of computer monitor.

I watch HD material on 50" plasma monitor with resolution of 768X1366, this is ideal for 720p. For 1080i material HTPC down converts to plasma's resolution.

There are a few 24" LCDscreens that have native resolutionof 1200x1920 for around £1,300. They can be used for 1080 material without down converting. Sony had 24" wide-aspect CRT monitor that can also do 1200x1920 (and even higher) resolution.

Projectors are only recently becoming available for high resolution HDTV. Look for JVC HD2K, but down hope for a cheap find.

HDTV requires quality tube and only reasonably priced hardware available today is marketed for computer use.

Can't some of the new Sony screens display HD at 1080i? The Sony KD-34XS955 for example is capable of 1080i right? Or is it just HDTV ready?

There are many HD crt monitors sold on this side of the Atlantic and they look pretty damn awesome to me. A good example being Sony's XBR series which looks better than an equivalent size plasma displaying 720P.

Of course what is available here doesn't help anyone there.

Yea, I was looking at the Sony XBR series, but they don't seem to be sold over here.

Because there is no (legal) content to display on them, and there is no content as there are no mass market HDTV sets.

Hopefully Skys HDTV offering will kick off HDTV in the UK..

I think you're being a little 'harsh' on the uk. We were the first to introduce a regular high definiton tv service. The first to offer a national 625 line PAL Colour tv service. The first to offer a regular teletext service (and I suspect still maybe the only to legislate for a national audio descriptor service) among the leaders with a pan european multichannel analogue satellite service (Sky). I think we were the first to launch a national DTT service (remember some EU countries still don't even produce 16:9 pictures). Credit where credits due ! regards, yt.

...and inventing the thing. We should give credit for these "firsts" but remembering back to the good ol' days doesnt improve our current viewing experience. Digital TV had a very shakey start and PQ is very average. Its time the UK started leading the way again.
