I'd like to know this too... I guess we need to find a camera that uses the same chipset?

its getting pretty bad reviews atm, so i should imagine it will either get pulled or replaced, im not sure if there are any alternatives though,

how are they connected to the tv? is it one of panasonics own connections?

It's not so much the camera getting bad reviews more like the Skype implementation.

HD quality is only available to other Panasonic TV's and you have to have a particular version of Skype for Windows to get video on a connection to a Computer.

From skype website itself:

Note: this webcam does not work with computers. Video calling from your TV to a PC is only supported in the latest version of Skype for Windows (version 4.2 or later). We are working hard to make it possible to video call from your TV to people using Skype for Mac and Linux.

if this is true, Mac and Linux will be available any time in the future and all new Windows versions should support it from now on, right? I mean, it is not bounded to a particular version of skype for windows but mostly to newer versions of skype for windows (>4.2)

Sorry Kitus but I started this to see if anyone knew of an alternative - the debate on how the TY-CC10W camera actually performs is not really relevant to this thread.

May I suggest the following.....

Viera Cast (G20) and Skype Camera TY-CC10W - not working well

Sorry about that requiem, you are more than right.

I don't think it's that easy finding an alternative.. just as Netgear seems to offer a wifi adapter that just works out of the box, in our case there are other aspects that must be taken into account like fixation to the TV...

If anybody has some tip, I'm planning to get the original one as a Christmas present.

Unhappy Panasonic TV Skype Camera

Hi there
Just got a TV with this facility and am put off buying the camera as it's a) expensive and b) seems to have problems working with the Skype App on the TV. I can't say I'm all that impressed with the few apps that Panasonic have put on the TV but managed to get a USB dongle for £40 that worked fine, so perhaps someone will find a cheaper camera / mike setup that works too!

Well here's hoping.

Chris

Thumbs down Panasonic no help

I have bought a dmp-bdt110 and want to know other than the Panasonic TY-CC10W
webcam, what other 'compatable' webcams will work? What specification would a
webcam need. I can't justify spending another £150 or so on this camera when
the main reason I got the player was because of this feature.

ISSUE RESOLUTION: Dear Mr Keighley,

Thank you for your e-mail enquiry.

In response, we have not tested any third party webcams with the player so cannot guarantee their compatibility.

We trust that the above information will be of assistance to you. However, of course, if you should have any further queries, please do not hesitate to contact us on 0844 844 3852 or email us using the following email address:

7.SKYPE - Can I use my Web Camera as a communication camera for Skype?
Any camera that supports H.264 video format can be used with our Blu-ray Player for Skype feature. Most* Web Cameras do not support H.264 format.

Does anyone know of a webcam that uses H.264 format?

Alternative...

The specs look identical for the TYCC10W

TY-CC10W - Communications Camera - Shop and Compare at Panasonic

and the FaceVsion TouchCam™ N1....

http://www.facevsionusa.com/download/n1.pdf

so I have ordered one today from Amazon today for £86.94. Still expensive, but saving £60 or so on the Panasonic.

Will give you an update it it works or not.

What I would really like is if Panasonic would implement a driver to allow me to use my Sony PS3 Move Camera with the TV ....come to think on it ....maybe I should be checking to see if the PS3 can do Skype and do it that way and give up on Panasonics native implementation completely !!!

Looks like nothing else works. Shan't be buying it from Panasonic or elsewhere as it seems the Skype prog is rubbish and no compatible with most other computer either! Waste of time! (

Looks like this one will be an alternative, if you can find it for sale anywhere:

Logitech's 720p TV Cam lets you get your Skype on your 2011 Viera Connect HDTV -- Engadget

Vierra Connect

"VIERA Connect Will Be Open Platform for Application Developers and Device Manufacturers to Create a Broader IPTV Apps Ecosystem"

Perhaps Panasonic have finally woken up and will allow other manufacturers to provide compatible equipment !

Hi

I was looking at buying this player also, especially because of the Skype function.

However!! Great news!!

Sony have just released there flagship Blue-ray player the BDP-S780:
  • It can be used with any Skype enabled webcam (I don't know if it only communicates with Sony TV's like the Panasonic) however, a huge saving over having to by a dedicated cam.
  • It does cost arount £50 more but has all the features of the Panasonic and more.
Sony adds Skype to Blu-ray player, alongside new 2.1 home cinema systems - Pocket-lint

CNET:
Videos - Free video downloads and streaming video - CNET TV

AMAZON:
Sony BDPS780 Blu Ray / DVD Player MULTI REGION: Amazon.co.uk: Electronics

I have not used this unit as yet but I ordered it today and will post my findings up here. I am looking for the Skype functionality so this is a must for me, the two lower models below this won awards. I believe the S580 was awarded by What Hi-Fi and I trust those guys so hoping this unit also works well.
