Best TV for retro gaming

What is the best TV ever made for retro games consoles like the NES which don't look too good on modern TVs? Also do SNES consoles look good on LCD/Plasma TVs?

Most traditional 4:3 type CRT TV's are suitable for retro gaming, so long as there's at least 1 or 2 RGB compatible SCART's, and preferably S-Video (for PAL N64), and stereo sound.
The Sony Trinitron's are recommended as the high contrast nature of the Trinitron tubes make old graphics look nice and crisp. LCD's and Plasma TV's should really be avoided for the sole purpose of retro gaming (the latter may suffer with screen burn).

Thanks, is there a particular model that you could recommend?

If you get a 50hz set rather than 100hz or progressive you'll be able to make use of all the lightgun games which normally only work with 50hz sets. Also 50hz sets have absolutely no input lag as they do not process the image so game response time is far superior to lcds and a lesser extent plasmas.

Many 50hz sets have a true RGB mode which gives fantastic results. 100hz sets can't do this as they have to videograb the incoming video to process.

A 4:3 set is fine for retro games as many of the older consoles are setup for 4:3 anyway. I'd recommend a nice 21" Sony Trinitron set. You see them on freecycle quite regularly. Other excellent sets are Panasonic, Philips, Loewe, B&O, Thomson. Just try to find one which has had light use, perhaps a bedroom set. One important feature is 60hz framing compatibility. A good RGB scart switchbox will probably come in handy too.

Keep an eye out for any of the Sony TV's with silver cabinets, as these were the last ones they produced.
I second the recommendation for B&O (Bang & Olufsen), as they were high-end sets costing upwards of a grand in some cases, and can now be purchased second-hand for little money.

i would also like to recommend the sony trinitron as a tv to use for snes and so on, i used to own a 34 inch black sony crt 4:3 of course and i had this running with a USA snes console with full 21pin scart lead for stereo sound and true rgb pictures and it was fantastic, the tv has been going for over 16 years and still makes me smile with how great she looks when set up properly they sure dont make em like that anymore, the silver FD ( flat display ) types are also great even the 16:9 sets.

stay away from 100hz model's the only 100hz model i would say get if your lucky to find one is the toshiba 3787DB
otherwise look out for the sony KV-3432U, KV-29LS30U, KV28LS36U great examples for as little as £20-40

All the best anyway !
