HDMI Switch

Hello all,
I've previously installed a wall mounted plasma with a 5m long HDMI lead, now the customer has bought SKY HD as well as his previously owned blu ray player.
So I tried installing a 3:1 HDMI switch but the thing does not transmit audio on SKY HD and nothing on the HD player!!
I've checked the switch on single devices like my PS3 and a friends Sky HD and it works fine but as soon as I hook it up to the customers devices I have problems.
I've checked that the 5m long HDMI cable is fine and also changed the short HD cables too but still I have the problem.
Please can someone suggest a way forward with this, apart from installing a second HDMI cable in the wall - not possible anymore I'm afaid.

Regards

Toffee

Re: HDMI Switch

have you checked audio settings on both devices and are working ok.. also check audio settings on telly as well.

one more thing.. turn everything off .. then first turn on the HDMI Switcher then HD SKY then the blueray.. then finally turn on the telly.. all in that order.. hope this works for you..

Re: HDMI Switch

Thanks for the reply

I have checked the audio outputs are ok, without the switcher - why would they change?

I have also tried turning everything on in the order that you suggest except from the TV which has always been on.

Re: HDMI Switch

did you turn off the tv so it is in standby mode.. then followed the instructions

does the hdmi which connects to the telly work direct either from the bluray player or sky box rather going through the switcher..

do you have any other hdmi output source that you can try.. xbox perhaps

Re: HDMI Switch

No I didn't turn the Tv off in standby mode but i didn't need to when I checked it on my TV and PS3

The HDMI lead works perfectly without the switcher inline

I've tried the switcher on my PS3 and and my friends Sky HD and no problems whatsoever

I was wondering if there could be signal loss over a length of cable when used in conjuction with a switcher?

I don't know whether this could be related.

I have been using a joytech 3-input HDMI switcher with a TV for 15 months without problems. A week ago the TV broke (dead screen) and I received the repaired TV back today.

When I plug in my TV to the joytech output HDMI socket using any of my three HDMI cables, the joytech loses power - lights go out, no signal passes. This happens using the power adapter or the USB power input. BUT, plugging the TV directly to the freesat HD HDMI socket works faultlessly.

Solution I found was to wiggle the HDMI cable out of the TV ever so slightly.

I have no mains hum, fuses blowing or other nasties as far as I can tell.

Conclusion: TV HDMI socket is too close to something carrying a very low voltage and the splitter is ultra sensitive to voltage ... hope I'm right and don't end up frying something.

Hello Toffeeblue

Audio on the HDMI signal bus in buried within the video channel and the TV decodes it if its instructed to do so by the Source.

If you are seeing an image (SKY HD) but no audio there is an EDID problem between the Source and the Sync (Display) being introduced by the Switch/cabling.

SKY HD is 1080i50 - try the PS3 at 1080i60; you may find its OK with that but the switch and or your cabling is falling over at 1080p. You will need to manually set the PS3 to 1080i and also to 2.0 LPCM audio.

Probably time to try a different Switch!

I've tried 3 different digtal switches now and all of them loose the audio on Sky and don't transmit anything from the blu ray player!!
I installed a 1:4 manual switch and it worked fine on both the sky HD and the blu ray player - result so I thought apart from after 4 days the switch has stopped working
Can someone please help me as I am at a loss how to take this forward and I can't afford to keep buying the switches until I find one that works

Hello Toffeeblue

You can purchase an Octava switch on SOR - though I'm sure you wont have to return it

Media Factory - Octava HDMI Switch, Distribution, Extender and Converters
