Unhappy Im trying to find out how to get DVI to my HDTV from PC ot TV

Hiya!

Forgive my crap title but Im not sure how to explain in a more basic way what I am trying to do but I will expand on it here....

I have my PC which has dual DVI outputs and obviously the 1 output is going to my monitor but I would like to make use of the other output to my Samsung HDTV to enjoy HD films etc that I have on my desktop...

Now, my PC is at the opposite end of the room to the TV so the obvious option would be to move my PC and then use a DVI-HDMI converter and then a HDMI cable but this would then mean I would have to use my TV as my monitor as there is very little room to have my computer desk and everything by the TV so....

What are my options here? If Im right, then using a DVI-HDMI converter and a stupidly long HDMI cable would mean I would still have to find a solution to get the sound from the PC to the TV aswell as maybe having degraded HD signal due to the cable length? I mean were talking longer than a 5m cable needed here!

Help!

Hi,

Take a look at our DVI cables, you will find ones that are capable of much longer than 5m

The same applies to HDMI.

Do you know roughly the total distance?

You would also need a cable for sound, do you have a digital output or would you be using the 3.5mm jack?

Best Regards

Re: Im trying to find out how to get DVI to my HDTV from PC ot TV

Many thanks for the reply

There is no DVI input in the TV so a DVI cable wouldn't do the trick I think...

The total distance from the PC to the TV would be circa 7m but I have had another thought which you might be able to help with...

What if I were to move the PC base unit to the TV and keep my monitor etc at my computer desk? This would raise the question on how to get the picture back to my monitor but I think that may be easier?

Sorry I forgot to say, stick an adapter on the end.

Its 6 and two 3's really. Both DVI and HDMI are the same signal really.

Sound is the easy part, as its either a run of copper or optical, both which can go miles.

Best Regards

You can also get DVI-HDMI leads of various lengths if you look about.

If youre lucky your graphics card can send the sound via DVI/HDMI as well - My Radeon 3870 does, but it does need a new driver to do it, and to swap the sound output to the new "soundcard" in the control panel.

One other thing, you didnt mention which TV its going to or which graphics card, but there seems to be a compatibility problem between some ATI cards and Toshiba Regza displays. Seems the output from the graphics card isnt powerful enough to drive the toshiba, or the toshiba isnt as sensitive as other TVs, but an inline signal booster should solve that (it did for me).

Hiya Jas....

The graphics card Im using is a PNY nVidia 9800GT and TV is a Samsung LE37A556P1 Full HD 1080p...

Ive managed to sort out the overscan issue and it is now running on a DVI-HDMI cable.. The picture is intense!!

I have to admit its a little too intense but im sure ill get used to it!

easy.. how about running HDMI over Cat5. Here you have a thin cable so you should be able to hide it ok.. you can you HDMI extenders over cat5e. You have a sender and a receiver... thus allowing you to reveive on your telly both video and audio.
