PC to HDTV over HDMI-sound problems

Hi, hoping for a little help with being able to watch content from my PC on my TV.

I have a Sony Vaio notebook with HDMI output and a sony bravia HDTV. until recently i was running windows vista 32bit home premium and had no problems watching movies etc on the TV with full sound via the built in tv speakers using only a HDMI connection.
However since installing windows 7 last week i have been able to view content on the TV but i've been completely unable to get the sound to work via the TV speakers. It only plays sound via the notebook speakers.

the PC is using:
ATI Mobility Radeon HD 3400 series.
ATI HDMI Audio.
Realtek High Definition Audio.

I've done a little googling and know that not all graphics cards support sound over HDMI but this one obviously used to with windows vista, so i would assume that it still would with windows 7.
I'm guessing it's either a setting's or a driver issue.

Any help would be really appreciated.

many thanks,
jeff

Re: PC to HDTV over HDMI-sound problems

You need to go into the settings for sound playback and make the ATi HDMI audio device the default sound playback device.

When both Realtek and ATi HDMI audio are active , the realtek usually grabs the sound by default , especially if the TV is not on while booting up etc.

Re: PC to HDTV over HDMI-sound problems

Thanks for replying andy1249.
i've done what you suggested but when i access the sound settings it shows the ATi HDMI as "not plugged in" and the Realtek as the default device. It won't allow me to select the ATi HDMI. When i click on it's properties it is listed as working properly. I've tried updating the drivers and windows says they're up to date.
any further suggestions or help would be great.

cheers,
jeff

Re: PC to HDTV over HDMI-sound problems

Scratch that, i applied a little common sense and tried altering it with the TV plugged in. and miraculously it worked

i've set the ATI as default and it's all working just fine.

many thanks for your help
