Question HD via HDMI?

Hi,
I have a HD ready LCD (Philips 37” Model no: 37PF5520D/10 with a contrast ratio of 600:1 & brightness of 500 cd/m2) with built in Free view.
I also have a Philips DVD recorder (DVDR3380\05), which I have connected to this TV via a Scart cable. There is no HDMI involvement there.

Now I have seen a DVD player in Lidl, which comes with a HDMI connectivity. They call it “HDMI Upscaling DVD Player” (HDMI up to 1080p). Please see link below.</SPAN>

http://www.lidl.co.uk/uk/home.nsf/pages/c.o.20091022.p.HDMI_Upscaling_DVD_Player.ar3

My question is if I buy this DVD player & connect my HD ready TV to it via a HDMI cable, will I be able to see any increase in picture quality? (Or any improvement for that matter)

I have no plans to upgrade to Blue ray for now (above will cost me only £30). With the TV I have, I am not sure whether even a Blue Ray will bring me high quality pictures.

Please let me know your opinion (sorry if I sound very ignorant on this)

Many Thanks
Bud

Re: HD via HDMI?

You might, or you might not. Depends on a few things, such as how good the TVs in-built scaler is, how good the HDMI DVD player is at scaling, the type of signal the SCART DVD player is outputting (is it RGB, S-Video or Composite?) As it is a no-name player and only £30 it's probably not going to be that great. Technically an upscaling player is capable of a better picture overall, but if the scaler isn't as good as the one in your TV then it'll be worse. On a side note, you should make sure your existing DVD player is outputting in RGB if possible, as that is the highest quality you can get of an SD signal.

Re: HD via HDMI?

Hi, Yes my current DVD player/recorder is outputting RGB. I think the one in Lidl is a Silvercrest & the model is KH 6518 6519 HDMI DVD Player.

So you mean I cannot be certain of any improvemnts?

Thanks

Re: HD via HDMI?

I wouldn't be expecting much from it mate.
Philips LCD's are pretty darn good at upscaling to their native resolution, and i'd bet my left nut it would be better than a dvd upscaler from Aldi's.

Hmm....
There, I was dreaming my little boy's toy for this time...

And one last question before I give up on it,

Will any HD DVDs give me good picture quality as afterall it's a HD DVD player ....do you know?

Are HD DVDs are dearer than normal DVD's in general?

Thanks..I wont ask any more....promise!

Upscaling DVD players don't play HD DVD's ( a format which is now dead) and these upscaling dvd players have been accused before of false advertising.
They only take a standard dvd (576p resolution) and change it to 1080i before sending it to the tv, which the tv does this anyway if it is HD Ready or Full HD.

Now if i have misread your post and your asking is it worth buying a HD-DVD player in terms of quality over DVD, i would say YES YES YES.
But as the format is now dead it is VERY limited.
