Sony KD55a2000 blob

Guys, think my TV is starting to show signs of problems. About the top 2 inches of the screen now has some nasty green/yellow tinge on most backgrounds. Who has had there TV repaired? Have not got extended warranty but will be relying on SOGA to get something done. It does not yet look like a classic case of blob and am wondering if there could be a way I can get rid of it with an optical clean? PS not afraid of taking things apart

Perhaps we should start a poll? WHo has still got there SXRD and not suffering etc

extract here from our cousins over the pond surely this should apply to the uk? Those who have had their OB replaced is it this model KDS-55A2000 = A1203195A (A1203195B) as these are the affected ones

Dear Valued Sony Customer,

Models: KDS-50A2000, KDS-55A2000, KDS-60A2000, KDS-R60XBR2, KDS-R70XBR2

As part of the Sony commitment to quality, Sony is announcing that it is extending the limited warranty (parts and labor), in the United States, on the optical block of the above-referenced 2006 model SXRD televisions until June 30, 2010, regardless of purchase date. For any customer who requires repair of the optical block on one of the affected models, Sony will cover the cost of the optical block repair (parts and labor) at no charge through June 30, 2010. This extended warranty does not apply to the replaceable projection lamp or the other parts that may be used in the televisions.

Sony is also announcing that for any owner of these model televisions who paid out-of-pocket expenses on or before December 31, 2008 for an estimate or repair service to replace the optical block, Sony will reimburse the customer by mail for the cost of the optical block and the labor expense to replace it, subject to certain conditions. To receive reimbursement, please follow completely the directions on the claim form for reimbursement; all claims must be postmarked by January 31, 2009. See the claim form for complete terms and conditions.

All other terms of the Sony limited warranty continue to apply. Sony utilizes a network of hundreds of qualified independent third-party servicers to perform in-home television warranty service. Sony, through its authorized servicer network, will endeavor to repair your set within 30 days of your first contact. Re: Sony KD55a2000 blob

Sadly what happens in the US has no baring over here. It's funny that statement makes out Sony decided to to this out of the goodness of their hearts, in fact they were sued in a class action lawsuit and extending the warranty on the optical block was part of settlement, though to be fair I think they also extended the warranty for models not originally part of the lawsuit but since they used the same problem part that shouldn't come as much of a surprise.

Have look through my old thread here:

Re: Sony KD55a2000 blob

maybe you should try contacting sony and quote that letter to them, maybe you could use it as a basis for a county court case against them if they fob you off, it costs £30 to lodge an online case i think.

Making a Claim

Cheers Timelord. How is your screen holding out? I am going to take a photo and post it up on here for other to compare. When displaying a full white image I cannot see it but most other colurs it is visible. Will try and get something posted up.

Re: Sony KD55a2000 blob

My screens fine so far, had no major issues at all with the set, only had one lamp replacement so far too.

Im moving house soon, so im gonna whip the back off the set before we do and hoover all the crap out, was loads in the lamp compartment when i replaced that. Dont want any of that dust and ***** dislodged and floating around after the move.

good luck with yours btw, hope you can get it sorted. i stil rate these sets as one of the best around.

Re: Sony KD55a2000 blob

My set had the dreaded blob, after about 2 years, and the Optical Block was replaced under warranty by John Lewis' repair agent.

If my set hadn't been under warranty I'd have had no hesitation in pursuing a claim using the SoGA, as there is an awful lot of evidence out there to suggest that this is an inherent fault.

As it is, my TV has been getting a lot of use, so I expect that the dreaded green will make a reappearance before the end of my warranty. Unless of course the replacement optical block is a different part from the original, and is somehow blob proof, though I doubt it

Either way, I'll be inspecting my TV closely in the later stages of my warranty. Ideally it'll still be fine, but if it's starting to show again I'll be getting another warranty claim in, as SOGA wouldn't provide much compensation for a 5 year old set with disproportionately high repair costs!

Re: Sony KD55a2000 blob

Here is a picture of my blob, however I am not sure if it is SXRD chip related or discoloured glass (burnt?) in the optical path. Those with blobs how does it compare to yours. Will get a picture up on a solid background once my AVIA disk is back with me.

Comments please as I am very tempted to go down the SOGA route. These TV's were there flagship product and were sold that they are very long lasting and a simple bulb change would restore the picture like new after a few years (any one sold this yarn)
