RGB & Component

Hi all,

im about to wire up my front room with all media kit in the cellar, and I'm going to run a HDMI and component from the cellar to the TV.

Then I'm going to use my Sony AV amp to switch the HDMI and component for me, keeping the cabling to the tv @ minimum.

Only question is if I plug both component Wii and RGB computer into the sony, and then let this switch and send to the TV, will the TV be able to switch between the 'HD' Component signal from the Wii, and the RGB component signal from the lappy?

The current TV is a Toshiba 32WL56, however looking to get something bigger soon.

All answers eagerly and appreciatively received!

Re: RGB & Component

Hello billytkid

There are various flavours of RGB video signals.

The VGA (HD15) port on your PC will output an RGBHV signal (separate horizontal and vertical sync) usually at 60Hz or higher.

VGA signals are not normally catered for via the 3RCA (YUV component) inputs on an AV Amp - it gets confusing as YUV component input sockets are normally colour coded as Red, Green and Blue!!!

YUV signals have the sync 'component' buried within the green line of the connection.

You shouldn't have an issue switching HDMI and YUV signals via the AV Amp - either down a single HDMI cable (if the Amp offers cross conversion between analogue YUV and digital HDMI) or via two cables.

A VGA signal will have to pre processed ahead of the Amp or run on a dedicated cable to the display.

Newer Laptops often come supplied with HDMI (sound and vision) or DVI (video only) output sockets and are simpler to integrate into the 'single cable' HDMI world.

There are lots of options available in terms of integrating a VGA only PC into an HDMI cable - though they can be relatively expansive.

You could consider doing all of the video processing and switching ahead of the AV Amp - Media Factory - Octava HDCMP31-UK, Wii compatible HDMI + VGA switch
