A question for those who know there stuff about displays

Hiya guys I have a question for all out there who really get into tv display and definition. How much difference is there really between 1080 interlaced and 1080 progressive I am not talking about stats or numbers here I am more looking at the perception from the human eye. Thank you all in advance and I do realise this question can include a lot of vairiables.

Re: A question for those who know there stuff about displays

Way too open ended a question.

Are you up-scaling from SD to HD?

Are you cross converting BD from 1080p24 to 1080i60 or 1080p60 or leaving it alone as 1080p24?

Are you viewing a signal on a 1920x1080 pixel display or a display with more or less pixels than 1920x1080?

Are you viewing a 1080i broadcast (say SKY HD), viewing it on a 1920x1080 pixel display device, passing the signal through an up-scaling amp and trying to decide where to do the i to p conversion?

Are you assuming all Display devices are created equal???

Etc etc...

Joe

PS As 99.9% of all display devices that cater fro 1080i are 'Progressive' devices I'm not sure its possible to actually 'see' a 1080i signal - if that makes sense!!!

Re: A question for those who know there stuff about displays

Hey Joe
Its like this for example, the Tv is a hd tv but wont let a bluray set to 1080p output, So I assume its 1080i as I have had it reading on that setting,so the source would be a ps3 slim bluray settings I havent decided on yet tv is not with me its 4000 kilometres away, connection would be hdmi. The video audio source would be a bluray disc. So without having the tv with me and my sister not having the ps3 yet i cant experiment so was doing a hypothetical. Yes there are heaps of variables but with the info above i guess im asking can they still watch a bluray movie will there be a lot of difference to the eye? What settings on video output would be best? Thanks for your help so far mate and I do realise i have opened a bit of a can of worms here but any help appreciated.

Re: A question for those who know there stuff about displays

The BD disc is encoded at 1080p24.

If you Display wont accept 1080p24 or that format converted by the PS3 to 1080p60 you will have to set the PS3 to convert 1080p24 to 1080i60 and then let the Display deinterlace (convert back to Progressive) and scale to fill the pixels on the Display.

Any half decent display will do a decent enough job with the 1080i60 signal - if you have your Level 2 AV anorak on I'm sure you will spot 'problems' if you know what you are looking for. If your simply wanting to watch the movie I'm sure it will be OK.

Joe

PS You may run into problems with the likes of SKY HD (1080i50) on an imported display - some aren't too clever in terms of supporting 50Hz signals.
