HDMI over CAT5?

Hi all,

I've spotted an HDMI over CAT5/6 extender for £50, and I was thinking of this to move my equipment under the stairs cupboard and run CAT6 to the wall mounted TV (CAT6 to HDMI).

Has anyone used these? Will I suffer any quality loss or problems?

HDMI Over Cat 5 Balun HDMI Extender CAT5 / CAT6 1080p 50m Only £48.93 at TVCables

I was going to have a single output from an AV reciever (yet to be purchased) to a new TV which I will mount on the wall. I can then connect my V+, HTPC and Wii via the AV receiver under the stairs.

Any advise will be much apreciated!

Re: HDMI over CAT5?

How long will the CAT6 cable run be?

There are many HDMI over CAT5 extenders on the market - some support a wider feature set than others and some are less problematic than others once installed.

Having an AV Amp in the HDMI signal path complicates the EDID and HDCP background handshakes within the HDMI signal bus and does tend to remove a lot of HDMI extenders from your potential shopping list.

Re: HDMI over CAT5?

Hi

I want to hide everything (HTPC, games console, V+ box, amp, etc) away into the cupboard. I haven't bought anything yet so now is my time to plan this properly.

The distance from my wall to the cupboard is 10 meters (max), probably around 9 meters. I've just measured, and followed the route my cable would go.

What is the best way to do this? Use an HDMI extender, or just use 10 meter HDMI cables?

Are there other options I've missed?

Re: HDMI over CAT5?

At 10m you can keep things simple with a standard HDMI cable (CAT1) or an Amplified HDMI Cable (CAT2) The Media Factory - though note the cables tend to be thick and don't like going around tight bends.

If you are using an HDMI cable keep in mind you will want a wireless or wired control channel running alongside the Video and Audio on the HDMI cable.
