Sony kf-42we610 and hdcp through DVI HDTV input

I hope to get help about a Sony grand wega 42 “ LCD projection tv. Trying to figure out the what’s and if’s of getting a BluRay player for this set. It can handle 720P and 1080i but not 1080p. Also the big question is about the DVI HDTV input. Is the DVI hdcp compliant?

The manual says it is EIA-861 standard, and reviewing this at the same time frame as the production of the tv, hdcp was an option on the standard of dvi 1.0 I’m not sure whether it was an option or a requirement on this tv’s DVI.
Is there any help on finding out if the DVI has the hdcp compliance? I am going to try an email to sony (LOL) but do not expect an answer, maybe if I can find a tech support phone number, I’ll try that, too

If this is not hdcp compliant, then has anyone had success with the HDFury line of connectors? Would that permanently solve any hdcp problems, or only until discs or player blacklist the device?
Any help would be appreciated,
Thanks!

P.S. Has anyone figured out whether getting a blu-ray player with RGB outputs will guarantee you will at least get 720p or 1080i without problems from hdcp, because that would be the easiest, but I don't think this solves the hdcp problem...am I correct in that?

Re: Sony kf-42we610 and hdcp through DVI HDTV input

Thanks for the reply. I had seen a review listing hdcp, too, but I was skeptical...maybe I shouldn't be.

...then I've called Best Buy in the States, and they do not have any blu ray players that use DVI!!!!!!

I have to look into that, and also someone said you can get a cable to go from hdmi to DVI. Would that work as far as video signal and hdcp, assuming this TV really is hdcp compliant?

These are the questions of the moment. I will contact Sony (try to) and keep looking for the answers. We are happy with the TV and for that reason and just generally being green (a.k.a. thrifty) about it.

Thanks again...anyone else have more insight about how to get the DVI to take hdcp video signal if a blu ray player only has hdmi?

Re: Sony kf-42we610 and hdcp through DVI HDTV input

I did talk to sony technical support. On their web site specifications page I couldn't find that the DVI was hdcp compliant, but the phone support said that the TV was, and that all Sony TV's with a DVI are hdcp compliant.

Good news as a converter cable from hdmi to DVI is all I need to get the picture ,and digital sound cable is all I need to run the 5.1 sound to my Sony all in one compact theater (theatre ) system.

I am probably going to purchase a Sony blu ray so that possible "handshake" problems can be minimized as all the components will be Sony. Hope this may help someone else save the hours of research.

I found this thread through a Google search and it definitely helps as I have the same TV and was looking to make the jump to Blu-Ray myself. Thanks for the all info.

Re: Sony kf-42we610 and hdcp through DVI HDTV input

Did purchase a Sony BDP-S360 bul ray player and am happy with performance on this set up.

First test was using a Sting concert dvd and setting up the blu ray to 720p output. The dvd upscaling was great and was the difference of soft focus face details and clear skin textures on closeups. Anyone could see the difference, and it is worth it just for that improvement in dvd resolution.

Two blu ray discs watched so far were very sharp, but no way to compare the picture like with the dvd. Researched that 720p on this setup may be the best, but will also try 1080i to see what I think when a good blu ray scene to compare presents itself.

I was looking at that player or the BDP-BX2 myself but as long as you don't seem to be having problems with the S360, I'll probably pick that one up. What adapter did you get up getting?

Re: Sony kf-42we610 and hdcp through DVI HDTV input

I used a hdmi to dvi cable that was purchased at Best Buy to hook the blu ray to the TV, it's a common item, and that's great for everyone with this older dvi connection.

Re: Sony kf-42we610 and hdcp through DVI HDTV input

I ended up going with the Sony BDP-BX2 from Sam's Club. From what I was able to find out online, its basically identical to the BDP-S360 but Sony renames it for Sam's Club and Costco. It was $30 cheaper then the S360 and included a HDMI cable. I just had to get the adapter and hook it up. So far so good. The Dark Knight looks fantastic and the couple regular DVDs that I popped in looked much better then they did on my old DVD player.
