New TV Set Up

Thanks to members of this site my new SOny KV 32 FX 68 will arrive next week. Can anyone advise re the best set up. I'ce got Sony vcr, Tosh dvd and cable tv. I was going to get 2 decent cables for dvd and cable and use my existing one for video for now. I don't have surround sound yet but hope to get it in the new year. My old Sony tv is hooked up to a rotel amp and two mission speakers. Should I hook this up to the new set till I get my surround sound and do I need an optical cable for the dvd?
thanks again.

Can anyone help out here. I've bought a Creative 5.1 surround sound today ( half price as someone had taken it back) I've connected everything up as it shows but there's no sound coming out. The powers on. I've connected the DVD via the bitstream audio outlet as shown in the book to the coaxial on the Creative. I've checked the OSD and the dvd is set to bitstream.
Thanks
