What happened to SED?

Can anyone explain why SED, surely a most worthy successor to CRT, was never released?

It seems to me that Sony and Toshiba should have formed an alliance to buy out the patent rights from Canon. Instead there was a futile conflict over BluRay / HDDVD.

To my mind, the consumer is the loser.

There have been many technologies that sound great but have problems in practice - OLED still has a working life problem.
