I find Imax titles are great for pop.

This demo is also very impressive.

Check out despicable me there are a couple of really good bits of "pop" where gru crashes his spaceship and the bit where he is in space near the end where the pink ticket floats out of his pocket i sit 8 1/2 foot from my tv and this ticket was less than a foot from my face in fact both my daughter and wife nearly fell of the sofa trying to grab it,also turtle's tale sammy's adventure has a good amount pop especially where the snake comes towards you great imho.

Jon - I have seen both of the demos, they both have plenty of pop.

I will have a look at those LG ones albeit I think their demo's are the best anyway. Thats where the "potato fish" one comes from after all and it is the only clip that shows me the "wow" factor of 3D.

I'm of the opinion that impressive 3D is less about pop and more about layering the image in an impressive and immersive way. Pop out has it's place (especially in kids films, or certain 'horror' films) but for myself it's far from the reason I bought a 3Dtv.

Also the level of pop will differ from person to person and how they perceive it. This is possibly one of the reasons excessive 'pop' isn't used so much. If the left and right images are too far apart then instead of seeing the image as 3D you'll get ghosting (closing one eye will soon indicate if the ghosting is due to your tv OR due to your brain!).

For pop-out scenes though try:
(some of these have been mentioned)

Despicable Me, especially the credits at the end. Fast forward beyond the dancing and you'll get to a segment where the minions start to throw themselves out of the screen, getting closer each time.

Journey to the Centre of the Earth: A fairly recent 3D Bluray release, previously only available in anaglyph. It was one of the earlier 3D films and as such has utterly ridiculously exagerated depth and a fair number of pop out scenes (there's one within the first 20 seconds or so where a bugs antennas stick out of the screen).

Drive Angry: One scene in particular has impressive pop out, probably just over half way where a gun is pointed sideways, the camera then pans around so you're looking down the barrel. It made my wife jump!

My Bloody Valentine: Typical horror scares! Eyeball poking out at the screen, pick-axe flying towards you.

A Christmas Carol: Has some pop but one scene which shows off how powerful layering the screen correctly can be is when the ghost of christmas present rips up the house and flies it over London. Next to no 'pop' but it looks staggering.

Yogi Bear: Full of animated creatures flying out of the screen at you in slow motion!

Saw 3D and Final Destination 3D both had some scenes with a reasonable level of 'pop'

A very Harold and Kumar Christmas: Not available on Bluray yet but this film sounds like it'll be up your 3d alley. Even if you don't like the content it pokes fun at gimmicky 3d by constantly throwing things at the audience. People were ducking and shrieking all throughout the film.

We all really enjoyed it and will watch it again. It's probably down to the lack of 3D action movie content available more than anything else though.

I loved Drive Angry, it was an utterly ridiculous 3D ride. It's the type of film that benefits from 3D pop out effects. It's not meant to be taken seriously and I felt the 3D really added to how ridiculous, daft and stupidly over the top the film was.

Then again I'm a big b-movie fan

Yep, I'd probably have found it silly in 2D but being in 3D really seemed to add a lot to it for some reason.
If 'Drive Angry' is anything to go by I'm really looking forwards to seeing a lot more action movies in 3D, I'd love to see some war movies too.. 'Saving Private Ryan' in 3D would have been awesome awesome!

I see some pop on some material on my 59-inch D6900, but never to the extent that it's "poking me in the eye" or that I'm able to "grab it" as some people describe. There's always a perceivable barrier between me and the screen. Maybe it's the TV bezel that limits the illusion (something which is less of a problem on large screens in cinemas?)

For example, this clip at 1:40 should have the Harrier "poking me in the eye", and it certainly feels like it's coming out the screen...but only slightly.

I was shocked I didint like it as I like Nicholas Cage movies, Amber Heard is a babe and I love mindless action flicks. Oh well, maybe I wasnt in the right mood for it or maybe 3D added to it.

Potato Fish - Pop

Interestingly, the first view of the LG clip and I didn't get the pop-out potato fish at all. Just didn't see it. Watched it again and just let my eyes/brain relax and it came within inches of my nose! Maybe that's where I've been going wrong - Am I so desperate to see the 3D effect, that my concentration is actually ruining it?! Only time will tell I suppose...

Don't forget the 3D effect tends to be proportional to viewing disance. Thus 'pop' should seem double at 12' than at 6' (although far less immersive of course).

Personally I think it's a big mistake to concentrate on 'pop' and 'wow!' (which is not to say they aren't fun )

Best thing is to simply get used to the 3D effect to the point where you accept it as completely natural - much as you would if viewing a colour film instead of B&W.

you'll find this interesting Joe.. i just moved house and now when i watch the potato cod (distance from head to screen about 9 1/2 feet) it pokes out of the screen like it should! Not right in my face or anything but i can definitely see it poking out, and the whole 3d video just looks better although i can't put my finger on what looks better about it..

That is indeed interesting. I would say the most likely variant is the viewing angle (height or seating position) or something similar ? is it wall mounted ?

Is the 9 1/2 more or less than you originally had?

the tv is on the same stand as before, and might be a touch closer, but not more than 6" i would think. The only difference is i'm on a different sofa which is a bit higher, but i couldn't get the pop to work in my last house whether i sat, stood, walked to different places in the room..

Are you saying you should stand further back to exaggerate the effect then? how does that principle work for cinema ..... the further you sit back ? .... and i thought it was also commonly thought the bigger the screen the better ? basically brining the screen closer to you.

I cant say that I agree with you as yes the depth thing is all well and good but that doesnt entertain my kids or myself tbh. The 3D I would thing the majority of people picture things popping out at you. Certainly I did and I think that was most peoples appreciation.

I dont think it should be overkill but it should be there and obvious imho. 3D for me should be fun if I wanted a fish tank effect I would have bought a £1200 one with flipper in it lol.

Again this is down to perceptions and expectations. Its like one of my links to another study. Some people loved pop others struggled with it.

I was watching 3D last night and found the nearer I was to the screen the less noticeable the pop out effect. Sitting further back things were jumping out at me. Strange because I am sure I read somewhere that you should sit closer for 3d than for 2d but I find the same distance works equally well for me.

Yes; pop should be proportional to viewing distance as basically what you're doing is exaggerating the original camera position.

Say you perceive an image at 3' when you're viewing at 6'. If you now stand at 12' then the image should be seen at 6' etc. It's very easy to demonstrate this if you pause a virtual object in front of the screen. As you move towards the screen then the image recedes backwards. My TV is mounted almost diagonal to the entrance door to our lounge. If I enter when say an IMAX film is running and look up at the TV then it can be quite a shock as it looks like the Pacific ocean is pouring into the room (if you walk in on the right scene)

But 3D is a complete experience which starts at the beginning of a film and finishes at the end. It's a bit like saying you saw a colour film and some scenes were simply breathtaking as the colours looked amazing - and then saying you didn't experience that in another film you watched - even though that film was also in colour.

So yes; some 3D films are more impressive than others but in every case they should all provide a better experience than watching in 2D (assuming same material)

Pop out was great when I first got 3d and great if demoing for friends, but after the initial excitement, I prefer good depth for the overall viewing experience.

Recently I've watched golf, snooker and football in 3d, no pop-out, but the depth has made the 3d worthwhile.

If pop-out is a requirement of 3d, it will mostly be limited to animated movies and theme park attractions.

Jason you mention pausing a scene like say the potato cod on the LG demo and you should be able to move around the room viewing the image as though its all around, the thing is I downloaded a few demos (onto a usb stick) including that one but when I pause the image when the fish pops out the image doesn't stay in 3d if you get what I mean, it just looks like its on the TV rather than popping out.

Thanks

The link given in the first post seems to have been removed.

Anyone know of where else I'd get it? Really want to see this Potato Cod!

On mine if paused you can just walk around and view the 3D at any angle.

Just watched that LG demo and got whacked in the face by that broken baseball bat
