SONY STRDA1200ES 3D ready?

Hi there

Wondering if someone could possibly give me some advice. I am patiently awaiting my new 46" Samsung D8000 (from Red-onions.co.uk for £1350 if anyone is interested ) and will be wiring it up to my Sony STRDA1200ES receiver. This TV will be the first bit of kit that I can wire up the audio via HDMI (usually it's via the optical cable). The question is, will the STRDA1200ES be able to cope with the 1.4 HDMI requirements.....I know 1.4 is essential for 3D video but is it necessary for audio

There could very well be other people who have HDMI compatible receivers who have already asked this question so apologies in advance if that's the case!

Cheers

No, your receiver will not be compatible with either 3D video passthrough or ARC (which is audio back into the amp from the TV via HDMI). You would either need to upgrade your receiver, or run an optical for sound from the TV (as currently) and, for 3D Blu-Ray, buy a player with two HDMI outputs (Panasonic DMPBDT-310 springs to mind). If you plan on using a PS3, you would have to run that directly to the TV with HDMI, and with optical to the AV receiver, which, for video-games, won't result in any loss in sound quality.

Thank you so much for your response - much appreciated......will I lose much audio quality keeping things running through the optical then when watching 3D?

With Blu-Ray, yes, though perhaps more on a technical level than a difference you'd actually appreciate through the speakers. Have you already bought a 3D Blu-Ray player? If not, it's not going to represent much more to get the aforementioned Panasonic, especially considering how much you've saved on the TV.

If you have, or are planning, to get a PS3, the audio quality would be no different on 3D Blu-Rays, but the quality for 2D Blu-Rays would be compromised.

Just wanted to quickly clarify that in the second paragraph of the previous post I am referring to the sound quality via optical compared to HDMI of the PS3 specifically, not picture quality, or against other 3D players in general.
