1st HD TV, advice needed please

Hey people, i dont know what planet ive been living on but i think now or in a couple of months i should be buying our first hd tv, (actually first for the living room lol)

I;ve also measure the width of the room and from where the tv will go to where the sofa's are the distance is about 2.9m

At the moment we will be putting the tv on a stand and then when the walls are painted and cables run put it on the wall.

Taking into account the distance what tv would be best for me, im thinking a 50" plasma, 3d if possible

any other ideas's?

cheers

You don't mention a budget but the samsung 51d6900 gets good feedback. Has its issues but fewer than the 2011 Panasonics

Hi - it's far too general a question for anyone to be of much help, but I'd have thought that for a distance of 10 feet a 46" would be adequate, of any of the types, 3D is almost standard now, and any of the many makes would be fine.

Hiya mate,

Yeah, at that distance you'd be sorted with a 46" or more. If you're thinking plasma that really gives you two options, Sammy or Panny. 3d will be of the active variety of course. Of the samsungs, as vickster says, the 6900 seems to be the one most favoured. It certainly seems to have had less reported problems than the panasonics. All sets have their issues but the last couple of years hasn't been great for trouble free sets.

If you're thinking plasma then my money would be on the 51" 6900. With the shops clearing out last years stock you might also get a cracking bargain. Best of luck

So the 6900 is the 2011 model?, is there any site which shows the difference in all the samsuny and panasonic 2011-2012 models??

If i had to state a price i would probably say max is £900

There's some info in this forum (see the news section). You can also look at the ces vids but info was thin on the ground. For a comparison you'd probably need to do some googling about. Still hard to get info on the 2012 sets though.

Either way, with a budget of £900, I'd be looking for the 2011 models as the 2012's will carry a premium for a bit. Do you have a place like John Lewis or Richer Sounds near where you live? Best plan would be to pop in there and have a look.

Your budget puts you in either the Panasonic ST30 (or a smaller GT30) or the Samsung 6900. Check out the owners threads here on avf. With the panasonics the two possible issues to watch out for are 50hz bug and green blob. The Samsung has the buzz issue as far as i recall but I haven't been paying close attention the last couple of months so check the owners threads for the latest info.

Is that ALL Panas, and ALL Sammys? Or is it just that a few people have been unlucky and found the faults on the ones they bought?

Good spot. I was referring to the models mentioned in the sentence previously. Edited to clarify.
