Question Is there a better 37" LCD than the Panny TX-L37G10

Hi

I've finally decided to make the (massive lol) leap from 32" to 37".

I've got a 32" Panny and fancy getting the TX-L37G10 as a 37"

Can someone in the know back me up on this decision or is there a better 37" set available.

Time would be spent about equally on PS3, Blu-ray, DVD and SD Freeview. SD is quite important as my wife usually watches the quality shows on ITV and they're not likely to go HD for about 50 years or so.

Thanks in advance for any replies

Smile LCD Pannys

I asked the same question on another thread, vickster kindly replied that apparently 37" X10 has better SD performance than 37" G10. Interesting as the G10 is supposed to be better and is more expensive than the X10.

I am keen to find out this information as well.

From what I have read, if you can afford to around the £0950 - £1000 mark then the Philips 37PFL9604 has been well documented to be one of the best 37" out at the moment.

I am in the market for a 37" and am wieghing up if the Philips is worth paying that much extra for. Never had a HDTV before so its going to be my first and like you want it to last as long as possible and be good for all uses.

It appears to be the X10 for SD, G10 for HD (and Freesat)

Couple of reviews

9604 is best only among LCDs, i would consider 37X10 to be better still, as it has better blacks, better for gaming and more accurate colors and more shades of grays.

I recently bought and returned a Panasonic TX-L37G10.

The picture tones were great, the viewing angle superb and the sound was good but the black levels compared to an average Sony, Samsung etc were appalling and it is the same for V model aswell despite it's 100000 : 1 contrast. The problems with Panny's black levels are covered in the review of the G10 under the AVForum's 'Reviews' tag.

Does the G15 have the same problems?

Which Sony/Samsung TV's would be equivalent assuming Freesat is not required?

Yes it does as do all of the TX-L37's which is a real shame as they are really good LCD's. Apparently Panasonic may be introducing a new range later next year which should address this issue.

The Sony equivalent (which does have excellent black levels) would be the KDL37W5500 - like the Panansonic, it has 100HZ motion flow which does need to be tamed most of the time, but unlike the G10/15 it's viewing angle is poor, colour tones are not as good and the sound (if the lesser V5500 is anything to go by) needs support from another Audio source even after a few hours of adjustments!.

The Samsung equivalent would be the LE37B650 (or its lesser model the 550), again similar issues as the Sony but a better looking LCD and in my opinion better picture and sound.

Recently, in my quest to find the perfect 37 inch LCD, I have had the LGSL8000 recommended to me so that could be worth considering as an equivalent along with the LH7000 which always seems to get good write ups.

Hope the above helps

If you found the Black levels on the Panasonic questionable then you will definitely be disappointed in the LG.

The LG uses a S-IPS panel and IMHO these are generally not as good in this respect as the IPS-alpha panel used by the Panasonic.

Whilst I see that Black levels on Samsung/Sony S-PVA panels are supposed to be better I can find no fault with my last years Panasonic 37" IPS-alpha panel. (I can detect a very very slight bit of edge bleed in one corner if I sit in an otherwise completely dark room). Black levels are otherwise very acceptable - its black. Some of this is perhaps due to settings as I use a high contrast low brightness setting that I believe also gives richer colours and more depth. At the same time however all the requirements that the BBC publish for use with the BBC HD test card are met and in some cases exceeded.

I also note (and have seen several) that S-PVA panels are prone to clouding particularly after a year or so's use. What price black level then?
