Which brand is producing the best 42" LCD's at the moment? Are the LG any good? was looking at the LG 42LH7000, howwould this compare the to the samsung and sony 40" LCD, Really cant make up my mind at all. Is the imput Lag really that bad on the 40B650? as i will be using xbox on it.

From I've read the Sony W5500 seems to be the best lcd in this price range

I have a V5500 & have no issues with lag ...the W5500 was always better than the B650 for lag (pretty evenly matched appart from that though, sony bravia are marginly better for SD scaling in my view though ). With respect to LG, they make very good gaming sets but don't really excel at anything else, they are crtisized for black level & colour reproduction, depends what you want really. If you want a great all rounder then I would take the Sony bravia W5500 (the new firmware also supposed to remove any last traces of lag, not that I have ever really noticed any in the first place ). The new LG's are making a few waves with the L8000 series but its too early to tell yet weather they are going to address the older LG issues. If you are interested in a sony have a look here:

hmmm i think lag is important as i will be using an xbox some of the time, have been very tempted by the b650 as all reviews say very even backlighting compared to the sony. But then i have also read that the lag on it really spoils some games. Also the usb on the samsung will paly almost anything, although u can get round this by playing files via the usb on some blueray players. I feel that apart from the imput lag the samsung in much better than the W5500 in the other departments. Can the lag be improved on the samsung. Whats it like on the LG LH7000? The new LG looks great, awesome review on trusted reviews, whens it due for realease?

yeah thats the one lg sl8000, yeah its still really expensive, probably won't go back down for a while, i'd get the b750 if it went down to 799 again but its back up to 999 everywhere and im not paying a grand for it. there is a 3 year warrentee with the sony which is and advantage over samsung.

Have you considered a Panasonic plasma, less lag?

i have looked at the plasma, but they do cost quite a bit more to run and there are quite a lot heavier than an lcd and i'm looking to wall mount mine when i finally make up my mind, so plasma is out unfortunatly.

Cost a couple of quid more a month to run, small price for what might be the better TV

Plasmas can of course be wall mounted so I am not sure why you have discounted on that basis?

i think it works out more than a couple of quid, those panasonics run at about 100W more that a simlar lcd. Yeah sure they can be wall mounted, but its still an extra 10kg the wall needs to hold lol.

The problem with wall mounting the plasmas is more about their depth than the weight. As long as it is put up correctly, a wall mount will hold way more weight than even the heaviest plasma available.

I was all set to buy the Panasonic G10, but it is 11cm deep AND the manual advises that a clearance of 7cm must be left behind the set, meaning that the screen will be 18cm from the wall - not good in a smallish room.

It is a shame because I still think that the G10 is the best value screen around at the moment - especially the 50" for under £1k.

Which of those two TVs do you prefer when you have looked at them properly set up in a proper indy AV shop? Only way to decide for sure

is the 7cm gap left behind the tv advised because plasmas heat up? 18cm does mean it will stick out a lot, i think u can get lcd quite a lot closer. yeah it is a great screen, what did u wall mount in the end?

For 40/42 I would say that Sony, Samsung or Sharp, possibly certain Toshiba models.
And on the other one -

Well, I would have to say they are good in some respects (processing features, simple design) but average in others (Black and complete Contrast, Brightness levels). Your budget is slightly higher than mine so I would think a decent model by the Brands above would probably better the equivalent LG, unless you wanted 200Hz on the LH5000. I believe the LH7000 is a good set but I am not certain that it would be up to the standards of others in that price bracket.

I think it is advised to allow air flow from the fans.

I went for the Samsung 7 series LED/LCD in the end, with the slim mount. The screen is only around 5cm from the wall with this set up which makes a massive difference to how much the screen dominates the room imo.

ahh ok, you got the led then? they are really slim, how you finding it? i even think a normal LCD is going to stick out from the wall quite a bit, nothing much i can do about it i guess, other than buy a led lol.

The picture on the Samsung is superb, but I have got a bit of the dreaded 'clouding' issue so am going to get a replacement.

The only problem that I have is that the wall mount is so slim that it is difficult to run any cables behind it! Also, the viewing angle is very restricted compared to plasma, but I think that this is something common to all LCDs rather than just the LED/LCD ones.

I find the auto-dimming on my B6000 a bit of a pain, its quite distracting (turned it off but its still there!). Appart from that & the crappy sound from the speakers its not a bad TV at all, the colours are very nice on bright scenes, its just a shame they get a little mutted when the dimming kicks in with darker ones. I do not get any clouding issues but whites can bloom a bit! Just updated the setting too to unlock the 7000 features (HD from a USB, Yeah!) ! I still think my V5500 is a better all round set though, just my opinion.

Im, not sure about that 7cm gap with the wall bracket for plasmas, the fams seem to be at the top on the tv on the curved bit. All the plasma in the shop seemed to be mounted pretty close to the wall. I'm really tempted by the panasonic 42G10 plasma now over the sony W5500 as i have a spare satalite dish and the reviews are pretty good lol. argghh, i thought i was certain on the sony lol no warrenttee with the panasonic though, hmm

You could be right. I have had a Panasonic plasma on my wall for 6 years, and it was mounted within about 3cm. I am sure it will be fine, but would be a little worried about making a warranty claim if it did overheat.

If you have a satellite dish already then the G10 with Freesat must be a consideration if you watch any broadcast TV. My Samsung is way behind my old 480p plasma with Freeview pics, and I have never seen a 1080p that handles it that well.

It was not a concern for me as I watch very little broadcast TV, and can't have a dish anyway, but if you do...

I'd say that the Sony V/W5500 are one of the best LCD TVs you can buy at that price - you could pay a bit more and not get much improvement. Personally I am looking at a slightly lower budget but I still think the new Sony models have something to offer in most respects.

More like £20 with 8hours a day usage. G10 uses 200w, 40W5500 uses 131w in Home settings. Or 5.5p per day.
