Re: Spec me Biggest and Best TV for £500

Forget the 1080p, unless you're going to sitting about 6 feet away, and get the Panasonic 42X10 or LG 42PQ6000 plasma

Resolution isn't everything and these sets will have a much better picture quality (particularly on sd and movies) than a similarly priced lcd. PS3 is only 1080i for the majority of games and a 1080p set will have more upscaling to do than a 720 set on sd.

Re: Spec me Biggest and Best TV for £500

I ideally want 1080p as for future games and also HD movies, Blu-rays and just as I think from the distance and size of TV i would benefit from it.

In that case then:

LG 37LH30STARSTAR at Richer Sounds - HI-FI Separates, Home Cinema, Speakers, MP3 DVD Portables, Plasma LCD, etc.

or

TOSHIBA 37RV635D 37" 1080p LCD TV - Cheap TOSHIBA LCD TVs, Plasma TVs, HD Ready TVs

or

SAMSUNG LE40B530 at Richer Sounds - HI-FI Separates, Home Cinema, Speakers, MP3 DVD Portables, Plasma LCD, etc.

You'd have to up your budget to £550 if you want a 42" but these are the best 3 value for money 1080 sets available.

I would rather have a TV over 40", the samsung does look pretty good and you can get it for much cheaper elsewhere.

Actually there are some 40" and 42" for less than £500.

You pay for your dates?

Comet has a Toshiba 40LV665DB 40" LCD 1080p for £499, they claim 1/3 off, down from £749.

Don't know if its any good or not, but worth considering!

Hi,

It isn't everything but it is important. I disagree that the LG or Panasonic Plasma will be much better than any LCD TV at £500, and Freeview SD is poor anyway so it isn't really relevant to the peformance of the TV - upscaling cannot better a low quality broadcast and noise reduction can only do so much. A 1080p set will not have to downscale 1080p material and everything is upscaled anyway.

But honestly, for £500 you won't get many large TVs, LCD or Plasma. I think the Toshiba LV665 might be one of the better ones (I believe it has an S-PVA panel) but obviously none will be perfect. I have been looking for some time and despite price drops I think only a 37 would be available at this price. Most 37 inch sets have 1080p, the major Brands included.

Well I disagree right back

There is no lcd for £500 that can compete with the picture quality of the PQ6000 or X10. The plasmas will have better blacks, colour accuracy and motion handling which doesn't leave much for the lcd's to win on. One of the main strengths of these tv's is their sd quality. Also, the processing of sd material will still make a difference at this price point. The LG (which I own) has a particularly good sd pq.

Back on track for the OP, the Toshiba will have resolution+ which is supposed to do a good job of sd processing. The B530 is just a B550 with fewer connections so should also be a good quality set. At this price point I would definitely go for one of these 2 sets with your criteria.
