LCD choice in impossible!!!

Is there actually any good tv's on the market? Every set i look at seems to have a major drawback, samsung 40b650....aweful gaming lag, sony 40W5500(I thought this was the one), back light bleed and clouding, LG42lh7000.....picture not as good as sony. I'm finding making a choice for a 40-42" LCD a totally nightmare! when i think i have made the right choice i keep reading something bad! There must be a clear cut choice, someone help......pleaseee!! lol

Re: LCD choice in impossible!!!

LOL, I felt much like you last week, I strongly believe you can end up reading too many opinions and thoughts; if it serves to do one thing though, it's that there is no perfect television, all have some flaws.

I plumped for the 40W5500 with 3 years warranty (this offer ends out on the 30 September btw)

It's simply brilliant IMO:
Re: Clouding, none on mine; there is a slight spotlight at the bottom left of the screen when all the lights are off at night and watching a dark film.
Re: Gaming: haven't noticed any lag whatsoever
Re: SD pic quality, some channels better than others, around 7-10ft it's absolutely fine, footy is better than the V4000 that it replaced, 100hz and motion-flow helps a lot.
RE:HD/Bluray... one word: WOW. Truly amazing, grab a copy of Planet Earth Bluray, jaw dropping.

Re: LCD choice in impossible!!!

If you have any lights on you cannot see the spotlight AT ALL - it's only with all the lights off, really dark room and dark scene....

....just remembered that this was with the back light set quite high too... very minimal problem imo, and I'm quite picky.

I took the plunge over the Samsung B650 because of the 3 years warranty thrown in.

I got mine for £698 from Dixons with their offer last weekend :D

Re: LCD choice in impossible!!!

ahh awesome price mate, i was to busy umming and rrrrring so i missed it, i couldn't go with the samsung because the lag is meant to be so bad which is a shame, i would have gone with the samsung instead, although sound is better with sony also lol.

Re: LCD choice in impossible!!!

TBH m8, there is only one way the price is going and that's down, I reckon the 40W5500 will be around £700 in a month or two.

However, if you leave it until then, you will miss out on the 3 years warranty (30/09), which is worth much, much more in the long run.

Re: LCD choice in impossible!!!

Same position, same sets (also having a little look at the Samsung LEDs as well). Getting to the point where spending nearly £20 on magazines and hours of browsing plus a number of trips to Currys, Richer Sounds and Hi Fi Confidential is enough. I think I will plump for the Sony. The Samsung 650 did look very good in the shop and a Blu Ray on the Samsung LED looked sensational but for the price I could get a 46W5500 and the sound on the KED is awful, the SD picture is not supposed to be so good and there is some artificiality to the picture on blu ray. I have also read some poor reviews on the 650 and SD.
So - great that I now know that the 3 years ends this month, also went to Currys and they said they might consider the Sony trade in offer as well (old portable and get £150 off the 46W5500!), will confirm this tomorrow. Not sure when this offer ends but looks like the clock is ticking!

Re: LCD choice in impossible!!!

Been in the same boat for months bud, if you look over my posts ever since I joined it has been a bit of a 'saga' and is still on going (sort of anyway). Been looking and reading stuff for 6+ months.

After a few months of looking I plumped for a decent offer on the SB 37V4000 but after being disappointed with the motion handling on the set I decided to return it. Shame really because I was happy with most other aspects but I found the smearing pretty much unbearable when gaming.

Then I wanted to up my budget and strongly considered the 40W4000 but I had some saving to do and time was running out on the availability of this set. So I finally manage to get the money together but availability of the set at a reputable dealer plus the details of 2009 models came along made me hold off.

I read and read and read numerous reviews and opinions of this years sets and finally a few weeks ago I made the plunge again and went for the SB 40V5500. Mostly i'm pretty happy with the set picture is good, sound is okay and its definately an improvement over the 37V4000 (should be! Cost me another £300 on top!). My main bug bear at the moment though is an annoying buzzing noise coming from the transformer, processor? This is making me wonder whether to replace the set or not, its tricky because I have no stuck/dead pixels and no clouding so I could end up with same thing plus a mixture of the three on another set. I only have about a week left until it goes over the 30 day period!

As far as the 40W5500 I would go for it and get it from amazon as I hear they have a fantastic return policy, I could be testing it myself soon so watch this space! If you don't like the TV return for a full refund and if you like it but it has excessive backlight bleed swap it for a new set until you are happy. Either way you're not going to lose out. Oh I got the V because I was worried about the extra input lag 100Hz would cause but when I did a lag test the other day on the V5500(47 ms) I found it to have the same level of lag as the W5500 has in game mode. Whether this is true or not (I had slightly shoddy equipment) I don't know until someone with a better setup can verify.

Re: LCD choice in impossible!!!

Thanks for the info mate, i've been looking for 6 months plus also. I really wanted a 42" but Sony and Samsung don't make them and i think maybe opting of at 42" LG miht be a step down in picture quality from a Sony. Samsung looks great but the input lag is worse than the W5500! Do all transformers have that buzzing noise or do u think u have a faulty one?

In the real world, not THAT much more power, £2 a month might be a small price to solve you headache and avoid compromising on PQ.
10kg = that is a small difference too and a non-issue.

No problem, not really sure about the buzzing being a fault or not but a lot of people I've asked on here dont seem to experience it so whether or not its a fault or im just being fussy, I'm not really sure. The fact that it goes when the picture is all white and calms down when on PC input leads me to believe it might not be a fault.

Re: LCD choice in impossible!!!

Hey cheddington ,
Just wanted to ask if you can actually notice the input lag while playing on your v5500. I mean numbers are great and all but I'm dying to know whether it's really going to (negatively)affect my (online) fps gaming on my 360 if i purchase a 46W5500. Any comment on your experience would be great,

greetz jmichieslens
