£1000 for a new tv

Hi All,

I have £1000 for a new tv but can't decide which one to get and would appreciate your opinions on the 3 below:

Sony W5500
Samsung 7000 LED
LG 42SL8000

I mainly watch SD but a bit of HD and gaming.

Many Thanks
Pete

Firstly, i would add the Panasonic G10 to your list then compare all the reviews, I personally cant fault the pic quality on the G10 but there are lots of people more qualified than me to comment on the subject.

The advice is still valid though, unless one games a lot, I can't se how Plasma should be dismissed, if you're into movies and sport in particular ?

Re: £1000 for a new tv

I don't know why but i seem to be leaning more towards the LCD's rather than plasma which always looks to soft for me, i prefer the sharpness of LCD.

Re: £1000 for a new tv

Worth adding Philips to the list? You do pay a bit of a premium for the prettiness though

Philips 42PFL7404H 42" Full HD 1080p digital TV with Pixel Precise HD - Sound and Vision (or bigger but out of budget Philips 47PFL7404H 47" Full HD 1080p digital TV with Pixel Precise HD - Sound and Vision )

Philips 42PFL8404H 42" Full 1080p HD Ready LCD with Ambilight - Sound and Vision

Maybe add the Samsung 46b650 to the list too - gets good feedback

Re: £1000 for a new tv

Hi,
I wouldn't go for that particular Philips model over the Sony - despite being around the same price I think Sony has more to offer, though it does have Web TV on the 8404 (the DLNA model). I think the elephant in the room with LG/Philips panels is the Contrast, since neither the Black or the White level are the best. Philips apparently use some good filters though, and their sets do look impressive in the shops.

There aren't many Philips reviews on this site but on others such as there are a few. DigitalVersus has all the quantitative data on their latest sets - Philips 42PFL8404H - DigitalVersus
Quote:
Black levels: 0.18 cd/m² ANSI contrast: 763:1 Average gamma: 2.24 DeltaE on PC: 4.1 Relative energy consumption : 259 W/m² Homogeneity of whites: 3.5/5 Clouding: 5/5 Light leak onto dark greys at 45° : 0.07 cd/m² DeltaE at 45° : 4.1
Black level less than 0.2 but not 0.1, also backlight adjustments seem to be difficult and are possibly based on the brightness setting. On the plus side, S-IPS panels on the Philips seem to achieve a better viewing angle.

You can compare this review with that of the latest Sony and Samsung models (but not the LG). Just highlight Product Face-Offs on the top menu and click on Televisions.

Hope this is of some help,
Simon
