Sony KDL-40V5500 - any thoughts?

Hi everyone,

I just received my PS3 today, so now I'm ready for the next step: getting a proper screen

By looking on the several forums, I've noticed that Sony's V5500 series is mentioned a lot. Panasonic X10 too, but they are 42", and that's simply too much (I am looking for a 40 inch).

So, my screen of choice would be the KDL-40V5500. 40", Full-HD, Bravia3, MPEG-4 and a good picture.

But I haven't been able to find some users' reviews on the TV, neither professional reviews.

So what are your thoughts of the KDL-40V5500?

Thanks in advance

Re: Sony KDL-40V5500 - any thoughts?

In exactly the same boat here. Been looking at the 40W5500 although not sure what the differences are.

The basic view seems to be that it's a great set generally, for the money, although there have been some complaints about backlight bleeding. Other places I have read that it's not a problem with this machine, which is confusing.

The problem for gaming is that the KDL 5500 series have input lag, probably due to the processing needed for 100htz. There is still apparently noticeable input lag even in game mode. Strangely the older 4000 series didn't seem to have any input lag at all, probably because of the lack of 100htz.

A couple of questions... are there any 100htz tvs that don't have input lag? Or alternatively, what's the best sub 100htz TV out there? It's hard to find the compromise for good movies performance AND good gaming performance.

Actually re-reading this review, Sony KDL40W4500 / KDL40W4500U Review, input lag of 0-10ms in game mode (although this is vs the Samsung F96 which does have a bit of lag itself) is probably OK...

Re: Sony KDL-40V5500 - any thoughts?

V5500 doesn't have 100hz (that's exclusive for the W-series), and as far as I've heard, there should be absolutely none input lag.

In the W-series, you can just disable 100hz to remove the input lag since that's the main course.

Re: Sony KDL-40V5500 - any thoughts?

the W5500 has 100Hz,while the V5500 doesnt.Input lag should be of no concern on the W5500,because the game mode reduces it to non-visible levels

Re: Sony KDL-40V5500 - any thoughts?

I'm after a new set and the V5500 and W5500 both appeal. I read about the 'V' not having 100hz like the 'W', but does that and the input lag really matter?

I mean, just how noticeable a lag is it. If we're talking 'undetectable' to the human eye, then I can probably look at more sets anyway.

I guess I'm wondering if I'm worrying about nothing......

with the W5500's game mode, you are going to have to be very sensitive to notice a very slight delay, but its douptful if you are going to notice it at all.the V5500 doesnt have any, because of the absence of 100Hz

It's a dust magnet!

I have the 37V5500 and for gaming it's the business. End of. Period.

So for gaming there's no real difference between the two? Guess it's deciding if I need the 100hz more than I need the extra pounds in my wallet.....

Then it's all about the money then. Thanks.

Would really prefer one of them to have the illuminating Sony logo as I think it's a neat touch but alas, not on the new sets.

Re: Sony KDL-40V5500 - any thoughts?

in my haste i failed to notice the review link I posted was actually for the 4500 series rather than the 5500 series.

HDTVtest.co.uk does some fairly in depth reviews and gives precise specifications. I'm not sure how accurate they are though... Here's what they say are the input lags for the various models

KDL 4000 - no input lag (8ms response time)
Samsung F96 - benchmark they use - slightly more lag than KDL 4000 (10ms?)
KDL V4500 - 0 to 10ms in game mode vs F96
KDL 40W5500 - 17-33ms in game mode
KDL 37W5500 - 21ms in game mode

So there appears to be differing lag levels even in game mode. Maybe this is all just getting way too pedantic and it makes no difference. ChrisGgr said that the W5500 has no lag in game mode. Does this mean that the figures in the hdtvtest.co.uk reviews are wrong, or that they're correct but the lag is too small to matter? Thanks.

its actually to small to matter.HD TV TEST is the best review site in my opinion, they are always accurate and do in depth reviews

Re: Sony KDL-40V5500 - any thoughts?

I've been looking for a TV mainly for gaming for a while now and after a bad experience with a 37v4000 as Chris and others probably already know i'm finding it hard to take the plunge again. If I do though i'm pretty sure its going to be with the 40V5500 as I don't see the point in the 40W5500 if game mode is going to be on most of the time which disables its only different feature - 100Hz, unless there is something else i'm missing?

Re: Sony KDL-40V5500 - any thoughts?

Thanks for your replies! I'll be going with the 40V5500.. Fits my wall(et) perfect!

*edit*

What about SD? Does it have a good upscaler?

When upscaling DVD's on my Playstation you can actually not tell it's not HD when just seing it. There's some difficulties with the blacks, but the overall upscaling is done pretty well! Hope the V5500 is that nice too

Ohh... Now when I'm about to buy, I see a KDL40V5500K (K ??) on some of the shops. Is that just the European version?
