Re: Looking for a holiday in New York.

Best thing to do is try and source flight and hotel seperate, if you don't mind walking, get somewhere a bit off the main drag.

Exactly, all you need is cheap flights, hotel away from the centre and some guide books.

Re: Looking for a holiday in New York.

For hotels, try http://www.priceline.com/ - but name your own price (instead of searching). It's not well known, but it is used by the airlines, and by naming your own price, you can save a bundle on hotel rooms. You just tell it what standard hotel you want, and the area, and the price you are willing to pay - (think low! and maybe search for forums where they discuss successful bids). I know someone who regular stays in 4 star hotels (in london) and pays about £45 per night this way. Priceline is even better for the USA.

Most people are reluctant to do this, because they want to choose a specific hotel. But if you are prepared to gamble...

For flights - try http://www.orbitz.com/ and http://www.expedia.co.uk/

(ps. I am not associated with priceline in any way).

Re: Looking for a holiday in New York.

NYC is expensive for hotels unless you lower your standards a little. The last time I went across we stayed with friends but the previous year I stayed at Hotel 17. It's cheap and reasonable and pretty central. In NYC you get used to walking a lot, if you don't you'll miss out big time. It's one hell of a place. For my last two visits, I used expedia.

Re: Looking for a holiday in New York.

If you want to REALLY lower you standards - I stayed in Whitehouse 'Hotel' for 5 nights, really its a hostel. Its about $32/night. On Bowery, opposite the famous CBGB. Near to the east village in Greenwich Village. Its abit like a prison but wooden doors and internal walls. Not really selling it here. But its so cheap and everyone was friendly, even the night staff who were still polite when I wandered in at 5:30am. Close to lots of good cafes, shops, pizza etc.

Re: Looking for a holiday in New York.

Me and the girlfriend sized up new york for about £1200 PP for 14 nights through sky travel.

They are always cheap. 14 nigths in hong kong for as little as £650 each!

Give em a try. It all depends on the times you wanna go though. On their website just click city breaks and pop the details in
