No worries, the thing to remember is avenues run north/south and streets east/west, generally most addresses seem to say which intersection they are near so its just a case of remembering coordinates. The main exception is Broadway, that runs diagonally across from south east to the north West.
Its really useful and makes the city easy to navigate, it makes up for the complete lack of landmarks to guide you, everything is built high so it really is all like canyons and despite the empire state building being significantly taller than most other buildings you still can't see it easily once a few blocks away so aiming for something you can see is nigh on impossible to do
