Help me choose a Holiday for two !

Hi I have decided against going to Lesbos and Tunisa and the wife is currently looking at the canary Islands.

Its looking like fuerteventura is going to be our best bet although we know nothing about the place.

The internet is throwing up different reviews for the place and I'm not sure how good its going to be.

We want Sun a pool and good food and need it to be cheap once we are there.

I can spend upto £1200 for a week for two leaving around 30th july, it has to be around these dates as thats the only time I can have off work.

We are really struggling to find somewhere that suits and that we can be sure of a nice RELAXING time.

I hate flying so am not that keen on spending 4 hours on a plane. I hated flying to Turkey and Cyprus, although I dont mind the quieter parts of Turkey ( I hated Cyprus).

Please Please Help us !!!

I think that you will struggle to find a holiday for two at that price in Fuerteventura during the school holidays as that's peak pricing time

this is nice but it's in Lanzarote ( the nicest part of Lanzarote) and it isn't too much over budget

Gran Canaria is nice one the Canaries. Stayed in Puerto Rico a couple of times. Worth a look, there are plenty of places to choose from. I stayed in the Riu Vistamar last time and would recommend it even if it would be slightly over budget.

Well, I know I also replied to your Lesbos thread...

We go to Fuerteventura as well. We go to Corralejo and will be there in September. It is a lovely town, but not exactly beautiful. But it has character. Nice harbour area. The beaches are a mile or more away, and are some of Europe's best.
It's not a quiet resort. But not Benidorm! Lots of good bars, live music etc. And the food is fantastic and you will defintely find something you can eat!
But it's certainly not what you were originally asking for in Lesbos!

School holidays is the problem, I always book last minute and have had some fantastic deals on the internet including 5 star hotels. I love Turkey and as it is not in the Euro it is a lot cheaper.

Why not try the Algarve short flight and some nice places if you avoid the main tourist traps.

just looked £700 for Carveiro.

Blimey that's cheap. I do like Carveiro, it's one of my favourite parts of the Algarve and is a must for anyone who loves sardines

Yeh I know these places arn't as peaceful as I was looking for and to honest its not about ME anymore, its about the wife. She is the one who is really after a holiday and her only requirements are that its hot and theres a pool.

I'm not really keen on flying either and the main reason for me not wanting to go back to Turkey is the 4 hour flight, but these Islands are the same time in the air anyway. I liked Turkey and have been many times but now Mr and Mrs Chav seem to go there alot also, when I first started going there about 14 years ago there was very few English there it was mainly Germans. This I like.

I'm thinking about Rhoads as that where the mother-in-law goes a lot and she loves it, but then she is loaded and spending money is not a problem for her. I however grew up never having any money and although I'm not poor now I still have a problem going through open wallet surgery for a cup or tea which is why Ideally I would not want to go somewhere where the Euro is.

A mate at work has told me about a Universal studios in Portaventurea in southern spain, and If im going to get fleeced I would want something i'm interested in to be there, so I am going to try and convince the wife that is place to be (and its only 2 and half hours on a flying coffin).

Thanks for all the replies. I'm not just looking for these places, if there is a nice place somewhere else then please put it forward and I'll have a look, I'm very poorly traveled you see and don't know things about places abroad that most people do.

PortAventura is a theme park situated in Salou, on the Costa Dorada in north eastern Spain. I went there a good few years ago, but Salou is a decent resort, Barcelona is only an hour away and makes a great day trip, and the flight to nearby Reus Airport was under 2 hours - great if you hate flying.

Firstly the main place that you get fleeced on pricing is good old Blighty. Sterling may be weak against the Euro at the moment but food and drink pricing in Eurozone resorts is still generally cheaper than here.

The Balearics may well be worth a look as they are only just over two hours flying time. Menorca is peaceful as are Majorca and Ibiza as long as you avoid the major tourist resorts.

We went to Puerta Pollensa on the North East coast of Majorca last October and loved it there

Take a look at Croatia - 2 hours on the plane (in fact ours took 1hr 50mins), most of the hotels are half board. I went to Porec in the north a few years ago and it was lovely, big Italian infulence so plenty of Piza's and Pasta dishes plus local dishes. Very clean and the airport was excellent.

P.s. and no Russians ! :-)

Maybe Malta? I know a few people (including my parents but don't let that put you off) who go there every year. Nice and peaceful, good hotels and short flight.

My wife has been looking at Croatia and Malta. I think she really wanted to go there. I work nights so over the weekend I'm going to look properly for myself.

Thanks again everyone, if anyone sees some great offers then please let me know !

Puerta Pollensa is beutiful, did you see the superb "art deco" hotel as you walk down the main drag?

We went to Matagorda in Lanzarote for a week beginning of June, loved every minute there.

Self catering cost us £265 each (obviously will be more now schools are off) and we didn't use the kitchen once, just ate out every day. large breakfasts, skip lunch and 3 course dinners out each night. 3 Courses you were looking at 30 -40 euros for meal for 2, not bad really.

It was a nice quiet resort, on the edge of Puerto Carmen, so you could walk 30 mins to get to a busy part if you wanted. Beaches were great, sea perfectly clear and blue, although was a bit nippy until you got used to it. Probably nice and warm now though.

We could see Fuetaventura across the sea, and the other half wants to go there next year as she loved it so much, especially the beaches and the volcano visit.

The girlfriend and I got back from Taurito in Gran Canaria about 10 days ago. We stayed at the Suite Princess which is an Adults only hotel (no kids running around screaming etc). Was all inclusive for a week and came to around your price range through Thomson.

My wife has booked a holiday.

We are going to sharm el sheikh.

5 and a half hours on a bloody plane

I need a few pointers here, firstly we need some travel plugs. I have seen some in poundstretcher for 99p but these say they are for Europe. Their universal one is £8. Where can i get one cheap ?

Secondly, can someone please tell me good things about this place as I'm really not getting the vibe. I have seen some really nice pictures of people in the sea looking at coral, this interests me greatly except I'm sure these loads of sharks about out there.

Any advice people can give me about the area would be gratefully received.

Thanks !

We leave on Sunday. I can deal with heat really, I moan about it being hot but I was a Furnace man for 7 years and resting temperature was 50c anyway, so I can bear heat. It reached 50c when I was in Cyprus and the Cypriots were all melting and saying it was too hot, But I could bear it and the wife seems to be powered by heat.

fair enough!

I have been to Sharm before and it wasn't really my thing but if you are looking for a nice hot place to just sit by the pool and relax then it fits perfectly

The hotel I'm staying at has reviews saying its not the best for kids as there is little night time entertainment. I'm hoping there arn't many kids there then.

I watched desert seas on Nat Geo Wild and it shows the red sea. Looks like quite a lot of life in there. This interests me a lot !!

Yeh if you're into scuba then it is one of the best places to go. I did a little snorkeling near the hotel which was pretty good but apart from that I got a little bored, except for the day trip to Cairo to see the pyramids which was awesome

Me and everybody else , one woman came back on a drip

The place is renowned for it unfortunately (don't drink the fruit juice in the morning is apparently a good tip)

If the beach hawkers start to bother your Mrs you will need to tell them to go away , they will not listen to women at all .

I've looked at reviews of the hotel and only one person has metioned getting the runs.

I have no problem in telling folk to F off if they start annoying me or the wife, in fact I'm probably a little too eager to do so after some harassment we got in Turkey 14 years ago. Back the I had nice blond locks and being tall I looked a lot like a German, and the wife being short with dark hair and tanning very nicely looked ( dare I say it) a bit Turkish. The Turks thought that I Was stealing a Turkish lady from them and I had to assert myself pretty quickly.

Thankfully (?) I have no hair now :D, and the wife is a better Thai boxer than me sometimes !

When I was looking at reviews of various hotels it was the most common comment - virtually everyone got it at some point on their holiday, especially with that heat exposure and dehydration etc...
Both the missus and myself got it and we're usually very careful but only lasted a day or two luckily.
