any freeview pvrs have tivo like ability to set wish-lists by actor, genre or keyword for example? thanks.

Nearest you are going to get is a Topfield assisted by TAP's

Or you could build an HTPC or buy one off the shelf with Windows Media Centre/Windows Vista Home Premium/Ultimate/TV pack/Windows 7.

They won't however have TiVo's learning ability to do suggestions or the amazing new integrated google-ranking style search by popularity and 'related shows you might like' that the TiVo series 3 has.
