Is external USB2 HDD too slow for HD 1080p playback?

I wonder if anyone can help with a stuttering playback problem. I have a Samsung 40 inch Led Tv ue40b7020, and a very new Western Digital 1TB harddrive on which I hope to created a library of my Bluray collection. As a test, I created an Anydvd HD rip of one of my Bluray movies and created an MKV file (via MakeMKV) and a Video TS file (via TSMuxR) from the main and largest M2TS stream (main movie). I wanted to maintain the maximum quality so I did'nt compress it down. It is around 41gb.

I put both files on my western digital external hdd and then connected it to my TV via the first USB port. Unfortunately, on selecting the relevant files, the playback exhibited a stuttering, jerky motion throughout.

Is this the result of an inability of external USB harddrives to cope with playing back HD 1080p material smoothly? This would be a huge shame as I was looking forward to keeping my growing collection of original blurays safe from wear and tear. Is there a way around this without compromising quality?
