Re: yellowstone

I second that....
I recorded it and when it got to the part with the fox hunting for the mouse I instant rewound it 5 times as it looked totally un-believable....
As for the guy who clears the snow off the roofs.... Makes my job in a garage workshop look totally humdrum in comparison. Mind you, I wouldn't like to give it a try. Imagine getting it wrong, doesn't bear thinking about.
Apart from the content of the doc, I must also say the picture quality was great even though I only have SD freeview (gotta persuade the missus to let me get freesat HD).
Gotta give the BBC a big for this, really enjoyed the first part and looks good for the rest.

Graham.

Re: yellowstone

Yes, the BBC's natural history unit keeps getting better all the time.
Another highlight, for me this week, was in "Natures Great Events" when they captured underwater footage of a humpback whale catching a seething ball of mackerel, from only a few feet away. Incredible.

Re: yellowstone

Only problem with these wonderful programmes is that it's easy to think you'll see that sought of thing if you visit the area.

I've been whale watching all over the world and have yet to see more than a spout on the horizon.

Remember, someone sat in a hide for two years () to get 25 seconds of snow leopard footage!

sort of know what you mean with the whales ! have only done one whale watch trip, and although we saw humpback whales...they were really far away.
but last September we visited Yellowstone, and after reading about what wildlife you could see...we thought yeah right but we were really amazed by the amount of animals we did actually see fairly close up (bison, bald eagles, moose, elk, coyote and best of all a grizzly bear ) it was flipping fantastic!

I went a few years ago and like you saw a lot of the wild life.
Didn't see any wolves though which was a real shame.

Highlights for me...

Snowed in for a couple of days at Mammoth Hot Springs.

Climbed up the hill at the back of the Grand Prismatic Spring to get a decent view - due to its elevation you can't actually see it from ground level. Bit naughty I know as I left the foot path. Just couldn't resist as its probably one of the most spectacular sights you could ever see..

Waited 5 hours to see a fairly rare but spectacular geyser go off. It was like camping a rare mob in an MMORPG!

Re: yellowstone

best nature thing i saw was at lake tahoe. the salmon were coming up from the lake in to one of the rivers that flow in to the lake. as you walked upstream the river was so shallow you could see hundreds of salmon struggling to get up to spawn and then unfortunately die. it was an awsome sight that i'll never forget.

Stunning doc, loved it, a must see

So much better than the natural world series? on bbc at the moment, that did nothing for me.

Spoilers

Episode 2 - Summer

It was very good, but Winter was better.
Amazing that it can snow in any month in Yellowstone Park.

Last part Autumn on weekend.

Re: yellowstone

I missed the first episode (away for the weekend and forgot it was on), but just watched 'Summer' and was impressed.

Spent a week in Yellowstone and the Grand Tetons in September 2007. Fabulous place in the flesh and, by far, the best holiday I've ever had. Saw loads of wildlife up close except for bears. Elk, moose, bison you can get close enough to touch - you wouldn't though - and the landscapes if you're into photography are stunning.

I'll be avidly watching the Autumn episode.
