Stewart Lee's Comedy Vehicle on BBC2

Did anyone else watch this then? I thought it was very funny in places and was glad to see he didn't dumb down his act for TV, unlike Al Murray' recent efforts.

YouTube - Stewart Lee's Comedy Vehicle. Trailer. March 2009

Stewart Lee's Comedy Vehicle marks the return to television, after a decade's absence, of one of Britain's most highly regarded stand-up comedians. In this first episode, Stewart looks at the modern phenomenon of toilet books. Where did they come from and who thought they were needed? And who on earth is reading them?

I saw it and it did make me laugh. But the rapper on the banister bit went on too long for me. That small critisism aside, I'll watch next week.

Yeah the gag about a rap singer on the Top of the Pops was too drawn out for my liking too but definitely will be tuning in next week too. He was spot on about the perils of buying Jeremy Clarkson books affecting your Amazon profile, reminds me of how borked the suggestions list becomes when i'm doing Christmas shopping! The final sketch with the Grange Hill sausage was also

The Red Button extra feature is also up on iPlayer for anyone else that missed it:

Armando Iannucci is the Executive Producer of Stewart Lee’s Comedy Vehicle. Each week Armando calls Stewart to account…"If you think of Stewart as the driver of the vehicle and the arguments as his wheels, I suppose you can think of me as the man who can have Stewart sacked".

Re: Stewart Lee's Comedy Vehicle on BBC2

I think this is the first time that Chris Morris has worked with Lee since falling out with Lee and Herring after doing Radio 4's On The Hour in 1991 (they weren't invited back for the TV version, The Day Today)
- although the falling out was mainly with Patrick Marber who they then mocked regularly on Fist Of Fun

Re: Stewart Lee's Comedy Vehicle on BBC2

I missed the first 10 minutes, but didn't find it funny this week.

The best I got was a slight smile when he described A L Webber as a monk in a wind tunnel.

Certainly nowhere near as funny as when Del Boy falls through the bar and Trigger makes a face.

Re: Stewart Lee's Comedy Vehicle on BBC2

I'm loving this, it's excellent, seriously who else could put into a standup the fact that Currys became a reseller for Magnet and get a laugh.

Interestingly I did remember that.

The whole Zavvi/Woolworths section was very well crafted, beautifully structured, had me laughing out loud.

The whole thing has a comfortable feel about it, it's non assuming and clever without tripping up it's own arse.

Thumbs up from me.

Re: Stewart Lee's Comedy Vehicle on BBC2

Although I've already seen a good part of the stand up from his last tour I'm still enjoying it immensely.

The sketches have been of variable quality in most of the shows but the ones from the "credit crunch" show are superb.

It's nice to see Simon Munnery and Kevin Eildon on TV again.

The pest controler chasing estate agents through the house was enough to cause a hernia with laughter.

STEWART LEE - Officially the 41st Best Stand Up Ever.::WWW.STEWARTLEE.CO.UK::.

STEWART LEE’S COMEDY VEHICLE SERIES 2

The second series of SLCV will begin transmission on BBC2 in the post-newsnight slot on Wednesday May 4th at 11.20pm.
We were asked to create a show to try and carve out the post-newsnight slot for comedy and have done so.

The material comprises the 3 hours I worked up in the Vegetable Stew shows August –December 2010, and ten minutes of old stuff, and has been seen by less than 25 000 guinea-pig people live in advance of transmission.

The material, except the ten minutes of old stuff, will not be available commercially in any other format than as part of SLCV series 2 and was generated specifically with the TV format in mind.
Tonight:

[BBC iPlayer - Stewart Lee's Comedy Vehicle: Series 2: Charity]

The BAFTA-nominated Stewart Lee's Comedy Vehicle returns for a second series, this time with actual jokes.

In the first of six themed shows, Stewart sets out to explore some ideas about charity, but instead gets sidetracked and ends up talking mostly about crisps.

More inimitable stand up from Stewart Lee, this time looking at why more and more people are thinking about moving out of London for a taste of life in the countryside, and what happens to the poor souls who actually go through with it.

I think he's seen one too many episodes of Family Guy, and based his comedy on repetition.

Haven't really seen him since Fist of Fun - which is going to be released on DVD very soon as Richard Herring has bought the rights from the BBC, as they weren't going to release it on DVD.

Missed the first series completely, but watched last night's just to see what it was all about.

Enjoyed Arnold Brown as "Grandad" ("and why not?") in last night's episode - nice little joke at the end of the program.

Repetition, or recall, has been a big part of his act for years. A decent opener, but he seemed to be enjoying himself too much

Yeah it was fun but these 30 minute shows aren't ideal showcases for his particular talent in my opinion, he's much funnier live (or on DVD) where he has the space to really engage the art of repetition.

Pleased to see him on the box at all mind you. I liked the Armando Iannucci "interview" clips, his struggle to insert jokes into his set and especially the "thinking man's comedian" quip. Hilarious.

Yeah, I agree about Armando, at the very least he breaks up the flow of the routine.

Was another odd half hour, but quite a few laugh out loud moments.

Certainly the first half was strong, though the joke about Ironik, he nicked from someone, I recall reading or hearing it when the guy got mugged.

Still some good stuff !

The guy is a near-genius and is 'top of the food chain' as far as stand-up comedians go. I'm sure he knows it too. There are so many little but perfectly-crafted moments in Comedy Vehicle that it'a always worth watching again. I'm re-watching the first series on Dave (or whatever Channel it's on) on Thursday nights too.

I doubt he's purloined anyone else's material (unless it was willfully intentional and/or funny to do so). Look up the Joe Pasquale piece on YouTube for his take on comics helping themselves to others' work.

Mike.
