'SciFi Channel' gone. Long Live Syfy

SciFi Channel will soon have a new name.

Quote:
Monday, NBCU is expected to announce the new name that will help the conglomerate have a brand name it can own (unlike "SciFi," which is considered too common of a term). The new name will begin usage July 7, according to The New York Times, and will include a change of its Web site from scifi.com to syfy.com.

"We couldn't own SciFi; it's a genre," said Bonnie Hammer, the president of NBC Universal Cable Entertainment and Universal Cable Productions. "But we can own Syfy."

NBCU says it had an internal marketing team develop the name. However, readers of this site most likely are aware that the new name has a direct similarity to its former brand, SyFy Portal. Quantum Global Media Inc., rebranded this site last month to Airlock Alpha, leaving behind the "Syfy" brand, and selling it to an undisclosed entity.

The new name will be joined by the slogan "Imagine Greater," and it seems the Saturn-shaped logo is going to be gone.

SciFi Channel got its name in 1992, but Syfy will go in front of advertisers Monday during its upfronts with advertisers.

"If you ask people their default perceptions of SciFi, they list space, aliens and the future," said current SciFi Channel president Dave Howe. "That didn't capture the full landscape of fantasy entertainment: the paranormal, the supernatural, action and adventure, superheroes.

Branding and logos, I hate them. Let's just have some decent TV.

Cheers

Exclamation Re: 'SciFi Channel' gone. Long Live Syfy

Hi,

What a crap renaming! Who the heck came-up with "SyFy"?! SyFy sounds not too dissimlar to a medical nickname for Syphillis!

Sci-Fi may only be a genre, and not a "brand" that can be copyrighted, but at least everyone knew what the channel was, what it showed, and what it stood for. It's almost as bad as UK Gold (?) rebranding themselves "Dave"!

A pointless and horrible waste of time! Let's hope the UK channel doesn't rename itself too.

Cool Re: 'SciFi Channel' gone. Long Live Syfy

I just hope that means a smaller DOG.

Totally forgot Dave was UK Gold, but reminds be of something that cropped up on QI that a when a university and a collage in Bradford merged they went to a market research to come up with a name for it and they came back with University of Bradford, The University of Bradford and Bradford University. For that they got paid £20,000.

There’s a lot of re branding going on goodness knows why Norwich Unions changing to a silly one and spending thousands on adverts for it.

US but since they are both owned by the same company you would expect a global rebranding eventually.

I don't have this channel but I'd rather there was no dog at all rather than a chihuahua. I think you hate logos as much as I do. I still will not watch any channel that has a logo/dog. I hate them.
