Re: Comic Relief Does the Apprentice

spoiler text (for those who haven't watched it yet) ...

Gerald Ratner had the best comedy moments for me ... during the pitch ... I was peeing myself on both occasions when he ended up saying "I better shut up" (for those who don't know or remember his high street cheapo jewellers chain, Ratners, and his own job went down the crapper in the early 90s after he made a joke during a business leaders conference speech about his products, possibly a sherry decanter and/or earrings being cheaper than a prawn cocktail sandwich because they were "crap" )

Hated the girls idea and Patsy Palmer's hissy fit was pure Bianca. Its got to be JR getting the chop tomorrow... or Ratner

Best line for me was from Jack Dee : Spoiler

'Sir Alan, if you are in a firing mood you should fire the person who arranges your chairs' as he stands their behind the 4 other guys who are seated in the boardroom

The Kili episode was very good and done for the right reasons. Glad they all made it up there and Fern, and it looked amazing location, i bet a few people will be doing it now.

Talking Re: Comic Relief Does the Apprentice

from Wiki ... Gerald's classic 1991 gaffe
Quote:
The speech

Although widely regarded as "tacky", the shops and their wares were nevertheless extremely popular with the public, until Ratner made a speech at the Institute of Directors on April 23, 1991. During the speech, he joked:

“We also do cut-glass sherry decanters complete with six glasses on a silver-plated tray that your butler can serve you drinks on, all for £4.95. People say, "How can you sell this for such a low price?", I say, "because it's total crap."”

He compounded this by going on to remark that some of the earrings were "cheaper than an M&S prawn sandwich but probably wouldn't last as long." After the speech, the value of the Ratners' group plummetted by around £500 million, which very nearly resulted in the firm's collapse.

Today, Ratner's gaffe is still famous in the corporate world, as an example on the value of branding and image over quality. Such gaffes are now sometimes called Doing a Ratner, and Ratner himself has acquired the soubriquet "The Sultan of Bling". Ratner has said in his defence that it was a private function which he did not expect to be reported, and his remarks were not made seriously.

It still hurts 16 years on. Gerald Ratner reveals the pain of becoming a national laughing stock - Times Online

Yeah was awesome, reminded me of when I climbed Sri Hemkunt which is at 4,500 meters

Glad Fern made it, she looked on the ropes often and I'm amazed Cheryl has any flesh left!

Re: Comic Relief Does the Apprentice

Watched this over the weekend - thought Ross was such a child - sometimes he's funny, but if that's a reflection of what he is like at home....jeez, his wife in kids must lead a tough life.....!

What surprised me was that Pasty Palmer scrubbed up well!
