Star Wars Live-Action TV Series

Lucas has revealed that he and his team were about to begin writing scripts for the live-action show. Casting for the series is currently underway.

Quote:
The show will focus on minor characters from the saga and be set in the time period between “Revenge of the Sith” (Episode III) and the original “Star Wars” (Episode IV). The action will follow the Rebel Alliance as it slowly gains strength against the Empire. There will be Stormtroopers, but no Jedi or Darth Vader will appear on screen. As he did with the “Clone Wars” series, Lucas will write and shoot an entire year’s worth of episodes before looking for a cable channel on which to air the series.

Let's hope for more team and less Lucas, it might turn out to be pretty good

So you would have bad Dr Who then?

Its Lucas so its highly unlikey Star Wars series is going to be a masterpiece, unless he gets the right team off writers, as for cash cow if i created Star Wars i would milk it for every cent for sure! and so would anyone else

Yes.

I've put up with it for many years. Star Wars has been brilliant at times but it's been very bad for a long time.

Who is up and down all the time. Even at it's worst I prefer it to SW.

Re: Star Wars Live-Action TV Series

This could be the start of a new Hollywood thing. A few years ago there were hardly any big budget super hero movies and now every other summer blockbuster contains an alter ego.
Now it might be the era of the movie come series.
Ok, so it's happened in the past on rare occasions - Buffy The Vampire Slayer , War Of The Worlds(?), PLanet Of The Apes - but not so long ago Terminator was turned into a series and is doing pretty well, and now Star Wars, first as a cartoon and now this.
If Hollywood follows it's standard procedure of milking a successful format, I can see a lot more movie franchises becoming serial dramas for the box.
The Hobbit or LOTR - following the adventures of Middle Earth citizens as they go to war every five minutes. There's all sorts of races to make stories for, including trees.
Iron Man - no doubt going to be a trilogy - no reason why a spin off series couldn't come of it.
Back To The Future - with time travel anything is possible, ask the good Doctor.
Predator or Aliens. These creatures keep on turning up in movies so making a series of them... A dozen men in rubber suits and some effective lighting - cheap and cheerful.
Indiana Jones - Been Done? Yes with Young Indy, but no reason not to make a series based on the hero in later life.
Robocop - I would have thought a prime target for a series. Or am I right in thinking it's already been done? Well the tongue in cheek nature of the films certainly made them seem like a series, especially the third one.
POTC, Robin Hood (again), Forrest Gump, more Batman, Hellboy, any other comic book hero, WallE, The Matrix, Willow, Jumper, Hitman, the list is almost endless.
I can see Hollywood pumping out quite a few Movie based series within the next decade with some intensity, probably to the point of saturation, until the buzz dies off and the spin off series becomes a rare thing once again.
I'm enjoying Terminator so it will be interesting to see what is released in the future and how gripping it becomes or how true to lore it is.
Bring on the Star Wars!

If only lucas would wake up and smell Timothy Zahns coffee.......perfect material in his various trilogies and one offs......ok they'd have to find some hamill/fisher/ford lookalikes for the post-jedi films but i could actually live it if they were halfway decent actors.....

Re: Star Wars Live-Action TV Series

I can imagine this will be set in between the Phantom Menace and Attack of The Clones, specifically when Anakin goes shopping for a new lightsabre between the two films

As you can tell all these filler series leave me cold (Sarah Conner, The Clone Wars) I would only be interested if this was set before The Phantom Menace (as in chronologically the first film ,though I would prefer it never existed), and I would specifically like it to be about the Pure Siths rise and fall, though I will bet everything I own that it wont.

I'm with you on that. The first SW novel I read was by Zahn (Heir To The Empire) and for me he is the best author for SW. I think I own all his SW novels now. He manages to get the characters just right and comes up with lines of dialogue you just know they'd say, and he keeps it all believeable, unlike a certain other more popular author (Anderson) I would love to see Thrawn, Jade and C'Baoth brought to the screen
I've just started reading Allegiance. Hopes it's as good as the other Zahn stories.
Anyway, a little off topic, but we can live in hope.

I think I'm correct in saying that both BTTF and Iron Man have had TV cartoon shows. Robocop has been done three times I believe. Once as a cartoon. There has even been a James Bond cartoon. There's also Highlander.

Can't say I've ever seen a cartoon series of any of the above, let alone a live action series. The closest to Iron Man I ever saw was Rocket Man or Rocketeer which I think dates back to the 50's or sixties (i saw reruns as a kid in the seventies).
I remember the Highlander series - thought it was awful, but I was never a fan of the movies either - ok, the first one just about does it for me.

I agree with you about the first Highlander film. Everything else was rubbish. I think you're talking about the 1949 King Of The Rocketmen which was a cinema serial which has been shown on TV. The Rocketeer was a 1991 film.

Rumors that production on the live action series will be shooting in Australia, whether it be ready for the 2010 date not sure. Also Lucasfilm with G4TV are going to present a 'live' panel from this years San Diego Comic-Con (July 25th at 2:00pm US), where apart from all things Star Wars, they are supposedly to make some kind off announcement, so could this be it?

About time IF it's still happening! Now it just needs good writers and to be aimed at an adult audience(but suitable for kids).

The Highlander TV series was actually pretty good and quite true to the feel of the original film, though it did flag a bit towards the end. Much better than any of the film sequels but then what isn't?

Unfortunately they went and ruined the TV show by making a film (The Source) to follow on to it which was just awful. Actually, they made two 'films of the TV show' but the first (Endgame) was at least reasonable.

The other big example of a TV series living up to the original film was Stargate, which in the main was a much better TV series than the original was as a film.

A live action Star Wars TV show could be incredible. There is such a rich universe with intrcate storylines and characters that it needn't even touch on "the force" or anything related to that side of things. Imagine The Sopranos or the Wire in space.........just me !?

He doesn't actually say he's got 50 hours shot. From the rest of the interview & him saying that it's 'on the shelf' & they're still trying to figure out how to film the thing for a budget, I take it to mean he's got 50 hours planned.

Unless George is playing all the roles & he's shooting it in his house, I'm sure if he'd actually shot anything, some cast or set pics would have leaked somewhere.

^ agree

He is saying it's far too expensive to film the tv series right now

Thats why it would make sense to focus on a narrow narrative. I am going to reveal my inner geek here but I had this idea years ago that might make a good Star Wars plot.

A the story could revolve around the Mos Eisley Cantina and all the different people that come through it at various points in time. Add an overall story arc and you have the foundations for some sort of long running series. Simplistic but enough to build on. Star Trek did a similiar thing with Deep Space 9, instead of your characters out in the world visiting tons of different places you are instead always in the same location. Build one really cool set, spend a little more on one set of CGI establishing shots that can be tweaked where needed. If Star Wars got back to its roots where 90% of didn't necessarily have to be CGI then its entirely feasible IMHO.

I think you are building yourself up to being disappointed. Remember this new Star Wars series is coming from a man whose recent track record includes Jar Jar Binks.
