No F1 on BBCHD Its Official !!!

Martin Brundle anounced on 5live today that the BBC would not be showing the new formula 1 season in HD !!!
their excuse is that they dont control the "feed" and dont have any of their own cameras there...

cant say how dissapointed i am to hear this, its a joke !!!
how can the bbc moan on that not enough people are watching bbchd and then do this...?

the FACT is that F1 is the 3rd most watched event in the WORLD (after the olympics & world cup) i simply dont belive they are not using HD cameras !!!

gutted, gutted,gutted

It is pretty poor, but its just a matter of time. Only certain GP's will be HD to begin with, with more following I guess.

Re: No F1 on BBCHD Its Official !!!

I thought this was old news Bernie said as much at the end of last season.

I don't think BE will tolerate the BBC next season not providing HD coverage though.

Re: No F1 on BBCHD Its Official !!!

The BBC don't have their own cameras at most of the circuits (maybe in Britain?) so it isn't really their fault it's not HD - just as it's not their fault that the local directors are rubbish! Just as something vaguely interesting begins to happen, they switch cameras to watch a car going round and round and round all by itself. Complain to the FIA, or Bernie Ecclescake - there's more than enough money in F1 to pay for new cameras at every circuit.

Here here!

I heard that Ecclescake said there was no point in filming in HD ?!? ***? Just because he should have gone to Specsavers, don't take it out on the rest of us!

Re: No F1 on BBCHD Its Official !!!

Just to clear a couple of things up it is not the BBC's fault at all that there will be no F1 HD in 2009 BBC director of sport Roger mosey has said they will show it if they can get F1 productions who now film and produce all race coverage except for Japan and Brazil.

There is no broadcaster in the world that has access to the HD feed it is only shown in motorhomes of a select few and a couple of teams corporate areas
nobody in the broadcasting industry can understand why F1 management do not want to release the HD feed for broadcast as having seen it myself at Monaco last year I can say it is very impressive.

Although I have never been told this officially part of the reason ITV pulled out of F1 was the lack of HD coverage in fact they got let down they were told that they would be allowed to broadcast it on ITV HD via Freesat and they went ahead and commisioned the building of a top of the range dual path HD uplink unit and awarded the contract to SIS link to run this unit throughout europe but when it came to it F1 productions said they could not broadcast the feed and if they did would risk huge legal bills. So in fact the HD feed as onluy ever made it back to ITV in London as a technical test and the HD unit is now used on Sky sports European tour golf.

There are a large number of broadcaster around the world who want and will broadcast in HD once the HD feed is released. My personal feeling is that F1 productions are looking into launching their own premium HD F1 channel as they already have at least 15 months of archive footage to show as well and in fact have invested a further large amount in purchasing a new HD VT/EVS unit so that they can go fully tapeless and feature even more HD replays

Id rather watch in the night garden than a procession of cars following each other round a track. F1 is the most boring sport in the history of the world.

Yep this is all old news and you are entirely correct. F1 is already filmed in HD and has been for atleast 2 years now, it's just not available to anyone for broadcast purposes yet. My own suspicion is that the Bernie is toying with the idea of having his own HD PPV channel in certain regions. I may be wrong, but for the life of me I cannot think of any other reason why they would not want give the broadcasters access to the HD feed. In my tiny mind, it might actually help the popularity of the sport and bring in new viewers, but hey..maybe that's why Bernie is a billionaire and I'm skint.

And just to be clear to the OP, F1 is not the third highest watched event in the world. That's what Bernie wants you and more importantly the corporate sponsorship investors to think but it is simply not true. I am an avid F1 fan. I have many friends who are avid sports fans and only one of them is interested in F1...and that's only because he's English and he believes the media hype surrounding Lewis Hamilton. If it weren't for him, he wouldn't be watching.

Why would you post in this thread if you have nothing of interest to add? I find football to be the most boring sport in the world, it's all a matter of taste and opinion so get off your high horse.

Your post was not relevent to the topic at hand and now you're getting even more off topic. It had nothing to do with 'in the night garden' either, you're just knocking the sport for the sake of it when others who do watch it are trying to discuss and understand why it's not being broadcast in a format that we, the people who do actually watch F1 want it to be shown in.

Is that clear to you?

It's not about owning the message boards. What you're saying is that it's ok to troll, go off topic but it's not ok for others to point out that it's unnecessary? Really? Why don't you stick to discussions that do interest you instead of wasting not only our time, but your own aswell?

BTW, I'm glad that in the night garden is shown in HD because both of my very young children love it and if I have to suffer it then atleast it looks pretty.

I wasnt intending to troll. I just gave my opinion. I wasnt going to post again either until you started compaining.

Personally I hate F1. I used to like it before they got rid of the overtaking.

I wont disturb your thread any more. Enjoy!

Well look, why don't we start over. No HD is an issue but it's not the most important thing to happen to F1 this year. There have been many major changes to the regulations that should make it easier for the cars to get closer to each other and therefore increase the overtaking. Infact, there are so many changes that the cars look entirely different, all of the aero devices that were the main cause of the dirty air are gone from the cars. Front wings are lower and winder, rear wings narrower and higher so the cars have much less downforce. And incase you didn't get the memo...slicks are back! You might want to start watching it again this year.

Next year however, it's bound to be broadcast in HD and even better than that, from 2010 onwards, refuelling will be banned meaning fewer pit stops as the tyres will have to be modified to accomodate strategies and last longer which will hopefully take the sport back to the way it used to be when you did enjoy it. More passing on track and less in the pit lane.

Yes, maybe id give it a go. If it could go back to the way it used to be then I would enjoy it. HD would probably make a big difference too. Why it isnt happening in what is probably the richest sport I dont understand. Just a 10th of a race drivers wage would probably pay for the HD set up. I think I miss murray walker aswell, it was never the same after moving to ITV.

Come on. You'll have to tune in to the first race if only to hear the classic F1 soundtrack "The Chain" again.I think that it has been confirmed that we'll be hearing that familiar tune come the end of March

Re: No F1 on BBCHD Its Official !!!

Forgive me if I'm wrong, but didn't F1 only change over to 16:9 a few years ago? I never would've expected a smooth transition to HD, especially for a global sport which expects standardized video outputs from all venues internationally...

It's not the BBCs fault, if they could broadcast it in HD they would!

Re: No F1 on BBCHD Its Official !!!

Yep - only the Japanese Grand Prix is currently broadcast in HD, and that is only HD in Japan (contractually I don't think the HD feed can be used by others).

The rest of the races may be shot using HD gear, but if it is shot in HD it never leaves the Bernievision complex... (Only one or two of the races are now covered by host broadcasters rather than Bernievision AIUI)

Even the F1 Cinema stuff isn't HD - it is upconverted SD 16:9 (good quality)

There is little doubt that the BBC would show F1 in HD if they could get the feed... It isn't the BBC's decision not to show the races in HD, they simply don't have access to HD race coverage (and neither do other broadcasters outside Japan).

On the other hand "The Chain" is back!

This is all the best news I've heard on F1 for more than a decade. I haven't watched F1 seriously since the days of Senna, but if this all happens, then it might be worth watching again.

Re: No F1 on BBCHD Its Official !!!

Since F1 in the past has been upscaled for showings in cinemas and such like. Is there a reason why the BBC couldn't broadcast the feed on BBCHD for upscaling like CH4 does with it's simulcast.

I know it's not the true HD that we are all craving, but it has to be better than rubbish SD on a large flat panel TV!!!
