Actually, they're only filmed in SD and upscaled for internal use. The Japanese GP (and a Belgian GP a couple of years ago) were filmed in HD, but for most of the time it is only SD.
For the cinema they upscale and reposition all the overlay graphics as they obviously don't need to be 4:3 safe.
The ITV PQ was rubbish most of the time just because of the poor bitrate they use. Early morning races live were generally much better than afternoon races (aside from Japan with its TV format conversion quality loss). On the BBC it will be much better.
And we'll have an onboard feed on interactive, yay. 302 on Freeview has F1 scheduled at the same time as qualifying, and I believe they'll be using 301 and 302 for onboards and a highlights channel in the race.
