Re: F1 on BBC Details (no HD?)

I read somewhere that it is unlikely to be in HD

I think maybe the British grand prix will be because the BBC is broadcasting it, but most of the other countries have decided not to broadcast in HD due to a lack of international interest in it.

Re: F1 on BBC Details (no HD?)

Really this is so dumb - massive opportunity to showcase what HD can do...I would imagine loads of potential new customers woudl jump aboard HD if they knew that the Grand Prix was being broadcast in such...

so disapointed...

The grand prix in HD would be absolute quality.

Re: F1 on BBC Details (no HD?)

It's nothing to do with "lack of interest" and everything to do with money.
The FIA want to make extra money on the HD feeds.
It isn't a case of "No F1 HD for the BBC", rather "No F1 HD for anyone".

Fleetwood Mac IS back

Whoops! Browser Settings Incompatible

EDIT Curious...on my screen I have a sign that says 'whoops browser settings incompatible' but they worked! Anyway the link is just to a story in the Telegraph saying Fleetwood Mac is back.

Re: F1 on BBC Details (no HD?)

there is of course one other problem with HD F1.

unless all of the races were moved to late night, the BBC in there wisdom only start broadcasting HD on sky from 7pm.

Amazing how channel4 can show HD all day when they are going out of business (supposedly) but the wonderful BBC only start at 7pm with kids programmes. go figure

Re: F1 on BBC Details (no HD?)

BBC-HD does, of course, transmit at other times when there's a need (like the Olympics or Wimbledon and I think I can just about remember the World Cup )... but then you already knew that didn't you?

Re: F1 on BBC Details (no HD?)

All F1 races are filmed using HD camera's it all down to how much the broadcaster wants to pay. The higher the bit rate the more is costs why do you think ITV PQ was ****** poor.

HD F1 Feeds have been available to cinemas for sometime.

This is true.

However if you read the other thread, none of this is in fact true. The cinema feed is upscaled, not true HD, and HD feed is not available to any broadcaster (nothing to do with money).

Get yourself a Humax PVR-9200T Freeview box.. I record red button regularly It also does a far better job of recording radio too.

Re: F1 on BBC Details (no HD?)

There will not be any HD coverage of F1 on BBC HD

Quote from BBC website

'We will not be able to provide F1 coverage in high definition this year. The BBC relies on Formula 1 Management (FOM) for the provision of all of its live pictures and as such the broadcasting of high definition pictures is dependent upon whether FOM uses HD cameras or not'

This is just ridiculous and makes me wonder who really is too blame here as we all believe FOM records the whole event in HD in any case

Actually, they're only filmed in SD and upscaled for internal use. The Japanese GP (and a Belgian GP a couple of years ago) were filmed in HD, but for most of the time it is only SD.

For the cinema they upscale and reposition all the overlay graphics as they obviously don't need to be 4:3 safe.

The ITV PQ was rubbish most of the time just because of the poor bitrate they use. Early morning races live were generally much better than afternoon races (aside from Japan with its TV format conversion quality loss). On the BBC it will be much better.

And we'll have an onboard feed on interactive, yay. 302 on Freeview has F1 scheduled at the same time as qualifying, and I believe they'll be using 301 and 302 for onboards and a highlights channel in the race.

Re: F1 on BBC Details (no HD?)

Actually a HD feed is made by FOM at every event it is just kept 'internal' this is well known.

I am also pleased that the BBC has got the rights for F1 back again. It's just seems a nonsense that this technological leading sport is so backward sometimes. Too many internal politics probably or cost or lack of vision. I'm not that interested in the interactive stuff I usually follow the lap times on my laptop which was available last season and is very revealing.

Football looks dramactically better in HD (720p) if F1 were available in HD it would in spectacle terms surpass any football coverage possibly even the recent Olympics (allowing for bit rate variations) imagine how many more systems that would potentially sell. Another whole season to wait I suppose

Yes, an HD feed is made by FOM, and it is kept internal, but it is only upscaled at most races.
