Oliver "Conan" Stone

Started watching Conan the Barabrian on channel 4 last night and I was suprised to see Oliver Stone credited as a writer.

Surely it's not THE Oliver Stone !

Is this a well know fact, or is anyone else surprised by this ?

I don't know for sure, but he certainly started off as a writer as opposed to directing so it's quite likely.

Must admit I quite like Conan the Barbarian...its cheesy but it feels authentic if you know what I mean. Gritty but silly... The uncut version is nice and bloody.

Oliver Stone is also responsible for that chopped off hand flick with michael caine ( a remake of the hands of Orlack if I'm not mistaken....)

The Hand is ace. I wish that was on DVD, I'd love to hear his commentary on that one.

Oliver Stone wrote the first draft of the Conan script, most of which never made it onto the screen. Apparently the scale of it was just too epic.... if you watch the documentary on the Conan SE disc you'll understand. It was very much in keeping with the original pulp novels.

Still think it's one of Arnie's best films to date (and it was his first).

Great film (and what a music score), oozes quality, one that I can watch over and over again.

Hardly his first. "Conan The Barbarian" was made in 1982. "Pumping Iron" (1977) "Cactus Jack" (1979) and the truly execrable "Hercules In New York" (1970) all predate it, and I dare say there are a couple of others too.

I would say that 'Scopion King' looks 'glossier' and sounds better, has bigger fight sequences and better dialogue (as opposed to Arnie muttering the word 'Crum !' every ten minutes), but overall Conon has got more 'class' and a more satifying story.

"Conan" has James Earl Jones (albeit in a silly wig) and Max Von Sydow (albeit rather briefly). Always a plus.

and big meatheads bashing down huge stone pillars with massive warhammers. Yet another plus.

John Milius is the man when it comes to blood and thunder dialogue.
