Ashes to Ashes Series 2

Posted on Thursday 11 December 2008
Gene Hunt and Alex Drake fight corruption in Ashes to Ashes 2

An underlying battle against police corruption will be at the heart of the second series of the BBC's cult hit Ashes to Ashes, according to producer Beth Willis.

Speaking to Digital Spy, Willis confirmed that the new series would be set in 1982, "six or seven months" after the end of the first season. In the first episode, out of time copper Alex Drake "gets some news... which makes her think this world is not as straightforward as she thought it was!"

Willis also noted that Sam Tyler, played by John Simm in Life on Mars, "does crop up a couple of times. We have a character from Life On Mars [and] that will inevitably reopen questions about Sam."

A third series of Ashes to Ashes is currently being outlined.

Re: Ashes to Ashes Series 2

A third series, they wanna make sure the viewing figures for season 2 pan out first.

Because the first season didn't exactly light the screen up did it?

No, it wasn't that great. They may have learnt from their mistakes.

Re: Ashes to Ashes Series 2

Although it weas not as good as Life On Mars I still enjoyed it immensely, looking forward to the next season. Any info on when the US remake of Life On Mars is being screened over here?

It didn't do anything for me either. I don't think they could've come up with an ending that would keep everyone happy.

All the best

Banana man: Tough guy Gene Hunt in robe and slippers on new Ashes To Ashes set
By Lizzie Smith
Last updated at 9:20 AM on 10th September 2008

As millions of viewers know, hardman DCI Gene Hunt is not someone to cross, but it appears actor Philip Glenister is a bit more of a softie.
These sneak photos from the set of the second series of Ashes to Ashes show the actor wrapped in a cuddly towelling dressing gown and cosy slippers.
Munching on a banana as he talks to a crew member between takes he couldn't look less intimidating.

Life on Mars hard man Philip Glenister tucks into a banana dressed in his robe and slippers
The look is a far cry from Glenister 's no-nonsense character Hunt - the sexist policeman wouldn't be caught out without his sharp suit and Audi Quattro.
And after his brief break at the catering van Glenister was indeed back in his no-nonsense costume, teamed unusually with a pair of wellies.

The actor has made the much-loved character his own after first appearing in Life on Mars, and then in the spin-off Ashes to Ashes.

The two dramas have proved one of the BBC's biggest success stories in recent years, winning a clutch of awards and a huge fanbase.

Back to the eighties: After slipping into a suit, teamed with a pair of wellies, Glenister was back in character

Rent Ashes to Ashes - Complete BBC Series 2 DVD | LOVEFiLM

If lovefilm.com are to be believed the second series will be available to buy/rent in July this year which hopefully means a mid spring/ early summer release on TV. Unless anyone else has anything more definitive?

Re: Ashes to Ashes Series 2

Has anyone bought the series one DVD? I assume the episode which had The Pop Group's "We Are All Prostitutes" as a major plot device must've keep the original soundtrack as below. It'd be the reason I'd buy it. Can anyone confirm this?

YouTube - We are all prostitutes - The pop group

I'm afraid the song isn't used. The line "we are all prostitutes" is used to portray a spotty teenager's angst at the establishment and that's about it as far as I know. Episode 2
TV Scoop: Ashes to Ashes: Episode 2 soundtrack

iirc, there is an excerpt played on the tape recorder when Alex and Gene are questioning the zitty boy, just after Alex reads the lyrics off the back of the single ... and Bri (sorry for being late ) this scene and tape recorder excerpt IS on the DVD (just played/ffwd'd the disc)

In general ALL the music is retained

Re: Ashes to Ashes Series 2

Gret news Krish. It's one of my favourite records of all time and I loved the episode as it played such a big part in it's plot. I watched this one as it went out so I didn't start recording until I realizwd The Pop Group were involved. It's back on my want list again.

Thanks

Just under £12 at several retailers here (they're all The Hut Group owned/run sites, including Asda where I purchased mine just a few weeks ago for the same price), is a 4-disc set
- Ashes to Ashes: Complete BBC Series 1 DVD

Re: Ashes to Ashes Series 2

I'll check that out. I keep seeing it in HMV at £22. I didn't enjoy this anywhere near as much as LOM series one which is why I've held back. I've waited for the price to drop. I must have it for The Pop Group episode though.

It's now £1.20ish cheaper at £10.74 through Asda's website (direct link: Ashes To Ashes - The Complete Series One Asda Entertainment - DVD)

- I just got a marketing email from them, and they're automatically taking 10% off at the checkout:

I don't know how long this promotion will last, as there were no T&Cs on the email and the subject field was "Save an extra 10% on DVD boxsets"
... it's usually a 24hr thing with The Hut sites, though they usually say it's such

Keep this up and they'll owe me money by the time I order. That would be well into The Pop Group philosophy.

Sorry, I think I had my ear plugs in for that 10 seconds. No wonder I, and no doubt plenty of other people missed that. Despite knowing of the song, what is played in the show barely amounts to a lot of noise.
In any case, it should hardly be the reason for not buying the series. At half price, prostitutes or no prostitutes, the first season is worth the outlay.

and what is iirc?

I'm a far greater fan of The Pop Group than I am of Ashes To Ashes. I caught on to them around the same time I discovered the music of Gil Evans. Gil and The Pop Group completely changed my musical taste. Both are quite obscure and for a major drama series to use this "lot of noise" as a pivotal part of the plot is quite remarkable.

It's also very unlikely that Alex would know the record that well if at all. It suggests she has actually gone back in time.

All the best

It's not far off. From what I've seen on the net, I would guess at a mid spring or early summer release. Also, from what I remember, at the end of the final episode in 2008, the announcer said something like Ashes to Ashes will return in a years time. Series one was shown early last year, not far past Christmas. Series two is very close by.

I don't think it will be long. Life On Mars and Ashes to Ashes S1 was always March IIRC. This takes us nicely into Spring/Summer when everyone should be outside and doing other stuff than watching the TV

Cheers Krish.

I've looked again and found no start date for series 2. It's going to be quite a bit more between the two series than we expected.

Regards

I am still looking, if I can find a start date I'll post it, I hope they at least do an advertising campaign to give us warning, I don't want to be scrolling through the EPG to see 'Ep 3/9'

I'd imagine they'll let us know. At least I hope they will.

Cheers
