The 39 Steps - BBC drama

The 39 Steps - 28th Dec, Sunday 8pm BBC1 90mins.

Anyone looking forward to this? Rupert Penry-Jones (Spooks) as Richard Hannay, in a new take off John Buchan's classic novel. They are promising us a edge of seat chase thriller for all the family. The BBC are stressing that the drama will appeal to a generation familiar with Jason Bourne and James Bond. Written by Lizzie Mickery, who co-wrote the 2006 thriller The 'State Within'.

Set on the eve of World War One on June 1914, London, Richard Hannay, recently returned from Africa, is bored and restless until he meets Scudder, a man who claims to be a British spy.

Re: The 39 Steps - BBC drama

Fan of the previous film versions but not a fan of the actor set to lead. I wouldn't have minded if they'd updated this because it could work really well as a modern thriller.

I too like all the versions but probably put Kenneth More 2nd watched it the other week and though it very good for the time it came out for a British production.. Laughed at the 2 bad guys watching his flat.

1st heavy to second: ever had suckling pig
2nd heavy: no
1st heavy: tender as a baby
2nd heavy: not had that either.

Robert Powell went on to make a series on ITV of the same character with a series of different plots each week.

Re: The 39 Steps - BBC drama

I wonder if this is the start of a new occasional series of BBC Hannay films with Penry-Jones, adapted from Buchan's novels, rather than the ITV Robert Powell series which wasn't

Was it me, but it felt lightweight?

Still watchable, but not overly impressed.

That was truly bad,the twist,so to speak, was so noticeable you could laugh.

Didn't watch it (as I said, I don't like the lead actor and not a fan of lite entertainment 'stars') but it looked pretty lightweight from the trailer. If they'd had an actor with some chops like Christopher Ecclestone or Robert Carlyle, someone decent from the current generation of actors, then it could have been good especially if they'd updated the story and set it now amidst the War on Terror.

Cool Re: The 39 Steps - BBC drama

Just watched 30 min of its whilst my monitor desired to display

So far I don’t like it, I don’t like stories being narrated for a kick off and also the introduced a character. Seeing the events in the story happened in 1914 how the hell can Arthur Worsley be an elderly grey haired gentleman, when I even remember him on TV in the 60-70 looking a lot younger with dark hair. Have to say if anyone never saw him he probably was the best ventriloquist ever and use to have the nickname Tight Lips as he use to actually was able to speak though the dummy with his lips closed. Oh he was born in 1900 so should have only been a teenager youth.

Re: The 39 Steps - BBC drama

oh my god, being a big fan ever since I watched the HITCHCOCK version, this was so so bad.

THIS PROVES HITCHCOCK was a GENIUS!!

I mean even the Robert Powell version compared to this is bloody super fantastic.

Each version has their own class stuff, the powell version with the big ben thing, now seems pure genius!

God why don't people make an effort these days.

I'll have to watch the hitchcock version again to regain my memories.
This is what you get when some female writes the script.
WOMEN DON'T GET IT.

big shame.

Re: The 39 Steps - BBC drama

What a waste of license payers money

Would rather have seen BBC HD broadcast an HD transfer of the original 1935 classic.
