Clarkson .. and his childish Ross-like behaviour!

I really enjoy (most of) Top Gear .. but why does Clarkson seem to so enjoy ridiculing his 'captive' studio audience - while he rakes in the dosh?

He's getting worse .... and bolder (balder? guffaw guffaw) by the episode!

Like Ross he aims it at those unable to 'fight' back at the time, usually it's about how someone looks - or about the 'rubbish' car they drive (probably bought with their hard-earned money)! The 'spotty' lad apparently needed Clearasil, guffaw, guffaw! How would he treat his own Son if he developed spots?

Mr Clarkson needs to take a long hard look at himself ... before he loses the plot, his self-respect - and more hair; but where is his (younger) successor right now?

Sorry about the rant ... but he had it coming!

I'm sure he'll never recover from such an onslaught.

Re: Clarkson .. and his childish Ross-like behaviour!

The studio audience take it as its meant toi be given ...... harmless fun and banter, they know thats whats gonna happen and they accept it, like us ,(well most of us anyway ), they like a joke and a giggle, and if its aimed at them then fair enough, they know what to expect.

Re: Clarkson .. and his childish Ross-like behaviour!

I think for me the difference is that Clarkson normally has a point or agenda behind most of his comments, its a segueway to something else or whatnot. Ross on the other hand was simply becoming childish and purile for no reason other than to test what he could get away with. I used to love watching Ross's Friday Night show, but after a while it become mostly about Ross and not the guest (which was a crying shame in the case of some of the guests he managed to snare), and then mostly about Ross trying to sneak in swear words, crude (but mostly pointless) banter and abuse of his guests on the assumption his audience wanted that. On more than a few occasions it backfired on him and both the guest and the audience became a little nervous at where he was going with a particular line of questioning or monologuing.

Clarkson = borderline but staying there.
Ross = over the border then caught by the border patrol and locked up for his crime.

Re: Clarkson .. and his childish Ross-like behaviour!

But did the "spotty guy" even have spots, Clarkson has called young looking people that before and even when they didn't have any spots, did he ask if they worked in KFC, McDonalds etc?

Not seen the show yet but would be surprised if they guy did have a load of spots.

Sometime after reviewing in the early 90's he did take a look at himself. A long look and realised he was a run of the mill boring presenter with little flair.

And, at that point, TV Clarkson was born. A wonderful comic creation based on hyperbole, soundbite and excess. A tremendous character that should never be taken seriously. Clarkson is an actor.

Ross on the other hand is just a 2@.

You know, when my lad hits teenage years and develops the odd spot or three, I'm pretty certain I'd advise him on products to help clear it up and the odd jovial comment. Hardly offensive or hard hitting stuff

You do know that the audience actually volenteers to be there? Its therefore reasonable to assume that they are

a. Car fans.
b. Fans of the show.
c. Fans of Clarkson et al
d. All of the above.

Probably upset the young lad ... he wouldn't have said it to anyone in a Pub and then walk off, or to a 'spotty' lad at Brize Norton on his way to Afganistan!

Now I've probably gone way too far with this .. I suppose he's only 'pushing the boundaries', getting more 'edgy'!

Re: Clarkson .. and his childish Ross-like behaviour!

Clarkson is one of the very few astute, intelligent and wity presenters we have on the box (and he's a very good writer too).

Top Gear works mostly because of the interplay between the three presenters, the audience and the guests. I can't see Tiff Needle and Vicky Hoohar-Henderson ever having the same national appeal.

Also I think a very important part of Clarkson's appeal is that he's not afraid to ridicule himself. If you want to start clipping his wings over something as inoffensive as his 'clearasil' reference then there's no hope for us, we might as well bring back Mary Whitehouse and be done with it.

On the silly magnet anti-collision thing, one of the audience said it would prevent punctures, and JC interrupted his own flow to listen to the guy, and appreciated the joke.
Now that's something JR wouldn't have done, (IMHO of course )

I think Ross only has time for himself, his 'chat show' turned into a JR publicity vehicle with extras.

The original piece actually read like an excerpt from a Sun article, not sure if that was intentional.

I cant believe people get upset over something like this. Its ridiculous.

They should go and find something better to do like watch paint dry or their washing machine spin.

Re: Clarkson .. and his childish Ross-like behaviour!

I suppose JC will rubbish the new Fiesta next week - 'shopping trolley' or something similar?

Not a car that he would consider buying of course - probably sling it around from side to side, smoking tyres, making ever so slightly slower progress than the camera vehicle ahead!

I could, once again, be completely wrong!

Mind you I do remember him 'lusting' over the new (at the time) 'New' Beetle .. said he wanted one!
