R.I.P Reg Varney

Just heard on the news Reg Varney has died.

Brilliant as Stan Butler in the 70s sitcom On the Buses he went there from The Rag Trade.

I know he did some straight roles to some critical acclaim.

I still watch On The Buses now and still makes me laugh he left a few series before the end and it was never the same without him IMO.

He got to a good age 92 which was nice to see especially after the sad death of his co star Bob Grant who played Jack.

I dont know much more but I can honestly say he made me laugh .

he will be missed

Re: R.I.P Reg Varney

On the buses was classic.

The team with Reg Varney were brilliant, with Blakey's 'I 'ate you butler!.
Im sure he will be driving a big red bus as he joins Bob Grant who played his wing-man Stan, up in the clouds.

RIP Reg Varney.

RIP Reg Varney.
Now thats a lovely thought especially after what happened to Bob Grant.

If anyone doesnt know he suffered sever depression after On the Buses finished couldnt get any acting work at all as he was typecast as Jack.

He went missing for some days there were please from actors and friends on the news for him to come home . He came back he talked about how his career was over after On the Buses had finished thanked everyone for all the support he recieved, then some time ( i dont know how long later) he commited suicide.

Re: R.I.P Reg Varney

I don't remember The Rag Trade but my parents loved it. I loved On The Buses as kid. I also enjoyed Begger My Neighbour which he did with Pat Coombs, June Whitfield and Peter Jones.

I saw it on DVD in HMV. Play have a couple in stock.

Play.com (UK) - Free Delivery - DVD - Search Results: the rag trade

If you go for them be sure to go for the original BBC episodes rather than the later LWT version which had Anna Karen but not Reg.

All the best

Re: R.I.P Reg Varney

Yes, a great comedian.

I'm ancient enough to remember The Rag Trade (), but our family's favourite was On The Buses, probably because my Dad was a bus driver.

Re: R.I.P Reg Varney

Sad to hear about Reg.

I used to love On The Buses and have got them all on DVD. Some classic characters in that series.

Reg also did a comedy series called "Down the 'gate" which was about Billinsgate Fish Market Porters. I don't remember much about that program except that it was sometime after On the Buses had finished.

R.I.P Reg... you were a legend.
