Spartacus - Season 1 (US + Spoilers)

Starz cable network will commit to a 13-episode. Smallville's Steven S. DeKnight has signed on as head writer and showrunner of the hour-long series. To be produced by Sam Raimi, Rob Tapert and Joshua Donen. Its been promised “R-rated action”. Will start production in New Zealand early next year, targeted for a summer debut on Starz channels. It's estimated that the budget will end up around $2 million an episode. Green screen sets will be used, that may not be a good thing...

Quote:
Starz Entertainment executive of programming Stephan Shelanski, said "This is not going to be at all like the 1960s Kirk Douglas film, we didn't want your typical sword-and-sandals. It's going to be fun, fast-moving, full of action and interesting characters and have a little more depth to it than the 1960s film."

Shelanski added that the show will be produced specifically for a premium cable audience, with "R-rated" action and storytelling. The goal is to accomplish the graphic-novel look and feel of such movies as "300" and "Sin City." As with "300," producers also will be looking to cast "Spartacus" with a group of fresh-faced, unknown actors.

Hamm added that "Spartacus" will be one of the first TV series to use an "almost 100% virtual environment," using live-action actors against virtual sets in the style of "300" and "Sin City."

"It will bring the younger audience who has grown up on graphic novels and video games this heightened reality; it's not going to look like anything you've seen before, especially on TV," said Hamm, who also worked with Raimi and Tapert when he was an exec at Universal TV and they were part of the producing team on "Xena: Warrior Princess" and "Hercules: The Legendary Journeys."

Given the budget of Rome I don't think that's possible, green screen although much cheaper than location has yet to match the real world photography and extensive high production value sets.

Of course that's not to say a good series can not be made on a budget of $2 million an episode but this shows scope at least on the surface looks too much for that level of investment.

Cool re: Spartacus - Season 1 (US + Spoilers)

The film deviated a bit from the truth, I think the slaves could have got away but the picking were good in Italy and stopped too long against Spartacus's wishes.

Episodes 1 + 2: The Red Serpent + Sacramentum Gladiatorum - 7.9/10

Pretty good start, takes a while to get into it and start rooting for the slave Spartacus, Andy Whitfield is fitting in the role. The story is off survival, hope, revenge, fear, hate and love.

Violence, yes lots the screen is awash with red, all artistically done, it basically follows the style off '300' the movie in terms off direction of fights, and cinematography. The use off slow-mo effects were lessened for episode 2, as it can get too much.

Just finished watching it, thought it was really good. Glad they did limit the slow-mo's, cause it was a bit annoying. 2nd ep was the better, and can see this being a great series.

Its not your typical series, they hold nothing back, blood and gore a plenty. And lots of nudity.

OK a long long time ago in a far away galaxy i met a wise....

Everyone has their own opinons on what they get out off each show, i do sometimes change my rating when i had more time to reflect on it.

The decimals - If i think its not quite a 8 or a 7, but closer to 8 then maybe a 7.8!, it not really that different from giving a letter rating of C, C-, C+ etc, that some reviewers give to films, etc

dont expect Rome levels of acting and script from this, as so far its all boobs and blood. Its very very stylised in the 300 mould, except the CGI is much rougher and in your face. That said, the 2nd episode is much better and actually quite a lot of fun.

You can see ep one on Starz's web site (no international blocking) at:

Spartacus: Blood and Sand: Screening Room, Watch Videos

The Antipodean Thracians were quite jolly.
