LOTR C4HD Sat 14th

Quick heads up, Lord of The Rings is on the planner for Sat 14th. If there was one film which would show C4 could whup BBCHD's @ss then this is it.

Planner does not flag it as HD yet...... come on boys in the words of the great Homer, please, please, please, please.

Volcano with Tommy Lee Jones looked blummin brilliant at the weekend on C4HD...... but The Abyss looked pants!

Let's have the HD version of LOTR........ you know you can do it!

Hi Tarbat,
Yes, that was my point, not yet flagged in HD, but here's hoping

I have seen listings before with HD flag to then change as HD later. In fact, I am sure SKY broadcast Return of The King in HD a couple of years ago now. I remember recording this to my box, but I have had HD now for nigh on 3 years and onto my second box, so that and all my Star Wars went for a burton

I am sending C4HD an email now..... let's see what their response is.

Re: LOTR C4HD Sat 14th

If you want to check if something is flagged wrong on an HD chanel, put it down to record then check how much space it uses on your hard drive, In this case LOTR will take up 12% of mine, so it is in HD. Should be good, shame about the adverts though.

Re: LOTR C4HD Sat 14th

I always thought that even SD upscaled on an HD channel would use up high hdd space because of the transmission bitrates being the same as if the programme were in HD.

In fact in my experience it always has.

Law and Order on Sky 1 HD took up as much space when it was upscaled SD as it did when they used HD masters to trasmit later.

Have I got that wrong?

Indeed, is this not why we have both versions when a channel is simulcast as it lets us record SD programmes off the SD version if we prefer to use less hdd space as opposed to loads if we had to record even non HD programming off the HD version.

Re: LOTR C4HD Sat 14th

I emailed C4HD at the start of the week, waiting to hear back, but it is looking promising, unless the SKY TV guide is wrong, good old SKY...bless

BOC|Ethan2000
I did the record to disk bit on Sun when I saw it on the planner, yep it is 12% which is good, but it is also 3 hours long

As soon as C4HD get back to me I will post it up.

Re: LOTR C4HD Sat 14th

But the bandwith on the sky movie channels seem quite low anyway. maybe C4 is higher. most films on Sky Movies in HD are looking quite naff.

No you are quite right, upscaled HD is treated no differently in terms of bitrate as native HD and since they are both the same resolution then disk usage is comparable.

The big change is the more efficient H.264 encoders now being used are working wonders with HD and the disk usage is far closer to that of SD encoded using mpeg2 although it's still at least double the size of the best SD.

It's been on Sky HD before many months ago, there doesn't need to be a blu-ray available for a broadcast to be HD, only the print of the film which can be re-mastered into HD.

Re: LOTR C4HD Sat 14th

He's probably lovingly crafting the pointless Blu-ray LIVE interactive features, that 90% of people won't be interested in.

Lord Of The Rings was shot on film that is already high definition, so doesn't need remastering.

Even if it's upscaled SD, it's still going to look much, much better than your DVDs... as Channel 4 HD seem to have a very good upscaling unit. Sometimes I need to double check something to see if it's native HD or SD, as it looks great on SD stuff.

True but it doesn't mean it's not HD or good HD for that matter.

Yes, C4HD SD upscaling is the best IMO very noticeable improvement over the main channel.

All three movies have been broadcast in HD in other countries, I have them on a hard drive somewhere if I can find it and as mentioned the third has certainly been on SKY HD

Re: LOTR C4HD Sat 14th

looking again at various listings

Sky Guide - says SD
Digiguide - says SD
Sky Online Guide says HD

However....EVERY entry on the Sky Online Guide for CH4HD is flagged as a HD broadcast when we know 99% of the transmission is in SD, so I'm guessing that it will only be broadcast in SD

But I will still be recording it "just in case".

They do look good in HD as I have them on DVD in the AVCHD 1080p format

Re: LOTR C4HD Sat 14th

A lot of upscaled programmes on CH4 hd that are upscaled look great usually anyway. I saw a glimpse of Without a trace the other day and the PQ was awsome. It said it was SD but the quality was far better than most HD american Broadcasts on SKY1 HD.
