Jonathon Ross on BBC-HD 5th September

Just noticed that Frday Night with Jonathon Ross is scheduled to be on BBC HD on Friday 5th September.
Hopefully this will be the start of more "mainstream" programs being shown in HD. How long till Eastenders?

Re: Jonathon Ross on BBC-HD 5th September

I don't know why Dragon's Den isn't.

It's 2 cameras, and the set is clearly HD capable.

No brainer really.

Although I wouldn't want to see that woman in HD...shudders.

Yes, isn't that a real pain in the butt! There can't be any detrimental reason why BBC can't broadcast their HD versions at the same time they are first broadcast on SD channels. They always used to do that in the days of the trial.

Still, if you can hold off watching the SD versions for a bit, you'll be able to catch any HD series that you miss, as it will join the ever growing number of repeats on BBC HD!

Re: Jonathon Ross on BBC-HD 5th September

I watched Mutual Friends (Alexander Armstrong's goodness over-rides Marc Warren's annoyingness), only to spot the HD showing 1hour later.

Instead they were showing a BBC2 programme Maestro at 9pm, they should really have swapped the timeslots.

Re: Jonathon Ross on BBC-HD 5th September

The picture quality for J-Ross was pretty rough by HD standards IMO...

As another thread here highlighted, BBC HD seems so much grainier than it ought to be. There's only so many times you can put it down to a 'stylistic choice' before it becomes apparent that BBC HD has defintiely got issues.

That doesn't mean that the picture is/was absolutely horrible (I managed to get it looking okay with some heavy noise reduction etc) but other HD channels look significantly better.

Re: Jonathon Ross on BBC-HD 5th September

Was Never HD in a million years. I dont care what the BBc say, that was simply not HD. My old crt box produces far better pictures than BBC HD. Shouldnt BBc change the name of teh channel to BBC VLD - Very Low Deffinition.

Re: Jonathon Ross on BBC-HD 5th September

Film doesn't produce excessive grain, poor quality film shot using poor quality cameras by people who have no idea what they are doing produces grain.

If done right you wouldn't notice much more grain than if it was shot digitally or on tape.

Either way it is the BBC introducing the picture issues, even if it is just because the staff have no idea what they are doing.

It's HD, but it's sooooooooo GRAINY!

I was hoping for some sort of an improvement after last week, but it looks like the whole series is going to be the same.

The DNR on my set has never been worked so hard!

Yeah I watched a few mins of this last night on BBC HD and I thought the picture was crap so I put normal BBC1 on to compare and could hardly tell the difference. Poor show BBC, what with this and Spooks code 9 (awful PQ as well) it doesn't bode well for future BBC HD programming does it...

It will be interesting to watch Noel's HQ live on Sky1 tonight. It's being broadcast from BBC Television Centre where JR comes from.

I've yet to see bad HD on a Sky made programme. Perhaps this will be the first?

Live or recorded? It won't be transmitted by the BBC of course, and I suspect the problems are at the encoding end. Sky will encode themselves I assume

It's live. But of course it depends if Sky are using BBC's cameras and gallery. Before, when Sky have used third party studios, it has been done as an outside broadcast, with the production being managed from OB vans parked outside.

The original Jools Holland's BBC HD shows were done like this and many people have commented on how better the PQ used to be!!

Re: Jonathon Ross on BBC-HD 5th September

Nothing wrong with the Noel's HQ PQ.

Just watched a few minutes, and you could almost read the tele-prompter on the camera behind Noel, had he been slightly closer I am sure you could have read the text.

The sound however is full of drops.

Re: Jonathon Ross on BBC-HD 5th September

This for me proves that the quality on BBc is clearly down to starved bandwith.

As for JR this week, I thought the SD version on BBC 1 was better because it wasnt grainy. Looked far better than the HD version if you ask me.

I´m not convinced. How come Tess is stunning in HD?

It´s in the production.

Re: Jonathon Ross on BBC-HD 5th September

Production and bandwidth are probably both factors.

My analysis is when the picture becomes very complicated or moves a lot the HQ quality is lost - that makes me conclude bitrate is a problem. On the Olympics you can see this on the same programme when it cuts from players/interviewers to complex crowd shots

Also, shows with pictures that we know are stunning in their original form - like Planet Earth, just don't look at all good anymore on BBC HD.

What will it take to make you be convinced though? How much proof is required?? lets look at the facts.

1) BBC lower the birate by a large reduction and the pictures look far worse on pretty much most of the shows.

2) SKY1 use the bbc hd studio and the pictures look as you put it "stunning".

3) When Eurosport and BBC shared the olympics coverage the bbc was all grainy yet Eurosport Hd was clear. production???? even though both channels were screaning the same thing??
