New Red Dwarf - 1hr special - 2009...

On August 24th an event celebrating the 20th anniversary of Seattle PBS affiliate KTSC-TV, Robert Llewellyn, who played the android Kryton, apparently disclosed that the BBC had commissioned a one-hour special with filming to commence in October 2008, and to be aired 2009.

Doug Naylor is to be said working on a script.

But why just a 1hr special, all that time and money for 1 episode?

Here's is a teaser video before the event at KTSC-TV was held, and Robert gives something away

I've heard it as 4 episodes for Dave using old footage. That is very worrying, but then everyone is on board, including Grant, so who knows.

Same here, some things should not be brought back as it's so easy to end up embarrassing the memory of what was wonderful.

Looks like DAVE is going to "finish off" the Red Dwarf story. I hope they don't make a mess of it!

Some shows are best left as they were, some hit a new level when resurrected. Eitherway, can't wait to find out !

Have to agree with this really, the departure of Rob Grant from series seven onwards was a great loss all round. The first six series are still classics and still gain new fans even to this day. Even to those new fans the last two series are pale imitations of the earlier six.

I'll obviously be watching this, but I do feel that perhaps it has had its day.

Re: Red Dwarf voyages back to Earth

Its great that theres new Dwarf. I've watched it from its very 1st episode, when it was 1st transmitted.

I remember being about 12-13 and being board, and seeing that a new sci-fi comedy was about to start on bbc2.

I changed over to that channel and watched "the end"

Since then I NEVER missed an episode, and taped ALL onto video, spending countless rainy nights watching them again and again.

It wasn't until the 3rd series that my freinds at school started to watch it. It felt wierd to hear people talking about it, when a year before they didn't want to know when I was telling them how funny it was, and the fact it was set in space was just a formality as it were.

BUT . . .

I am dissapointed that they are only doing 2 episodes before they get back to earth. I wanted another series, and have always dreamed of a film. I just think this is a quick fix to end the whole story.

A couple of years ago I went to a memrobilla fair at the NEC in brum, and got all the characters signatures from dwarf. I also filmed robert Llewellyn doing the "are you sure you want to change to red alert?" bit, I got Hattie Hatridge to do her AWOOGA AWOOGA ABANDON SHIP!!!
They were all there except Craig Charles who apparntly was with his sick and dying father.
Danny Jon Jules is fantastic. He really is a people person and was giving away his new song on vinal. I still have it somewhere.

Big mistake as it won't be the same and will just end up devaluing the original

I have watched RD since it first came out 21 years ago but it can't be worse than the last two series.

I can't see how they can get two Earth in two episodes as they are 3 million years away. Perhaps they find a wormhole.

Re: Red Dwarf voyages back to Earth

I thought after Series 5 it went rather crap - 5 wasn't the best mind you.

3 questions....

1) Which series did away with Red Dwarf and just had Starbug?
2) which series was the one when it went 35mm/widescreen? - it was around about then when I stopped watching.
3) Does anybody want any toast?

Series 6 was the one without the Dwarf and only had starbug.

Series 7 + 8 were painful to watch at 1st, but then a while later I watched them again, and really did laugh at them. My wife didn't though.

I'm not going to get too excited as Dave will no doubt pepper it with 7 minute advert breaks and have their logo splashed all over it with probably a large "exclusive" logo on it as well
Hopefully there will be a "Dave Free" DVD released!

I'm not a Red Dwarf fan, but I'm surprised that this has been relegated to Dave.

Why not BBC2?

Ideally it would just be Lister, Cat, Rimmer, Kryten and Holly, it worked so much better when it was just the 4 of them.

Re: New Red Dwarf - 1hr special - 2009...

I used to be a huge RD fan, but when the Grant/Naylor partnership came to an end, it went downhill extremely rapidly. Sure, Rimmer's extended salute still cracks me up in one of the "new" episodes, but that's really it. The new Kochanski is just terrible, the "jokes" are lame and all the magic has gone.

Mind you, I'll be interested to see if they've got their act together for the send-off. Fingers crossed.
