Which TV boxset should I buy next?

I have only recently 'got into' television and have been working my way through fantastic TV in last three years or so - I've seen most of the rated material apart from those in the poll above. I'm just about to finish Veronica Mars and Boston Legal came through the post this morning; I plan to buy Sports Night 10th Anniversary Edition when it comes out next month. After that which of the shows above should I buy first? I think I'm correct in thinking only The Sopranos has actually finished its run so I suppose it would make sense getting that before the others?

Thanks to this forum by the way as I've discovered some great telly!

Out of the 4 listed, The Sheild gets my vote.

An excellent end of first episode & I think it gets better as it goes on, esp with two heavyweight actors joining later in the series run.

Re: Which TV boxset should I buy next?

It has to be The Sopranos - one of the best series ever made IMO.I havent seen the last series yet,but am currently working my way through all the series again until I get back to the 6th and even the second time around it is head and shoulders above nearly everything else on tv - it doesnt have to rely on ridiculous cliff hangers to keep the audience interested, the way series such as Lost or Prison Break obviously feel they have to

Re: Which TV boxset should I buy next?

i say it before Razor jumps in

The Wire currently 4 seasons of 5 available
also
OZ

there you go razor saved you some typing

out of the ones you mentioned i would go for either Sopranos or rescue me they can be watched over and over whereas IMHO the other 2 dont hold up very well to repeat viewings and i love The Shield

I've seen Oz and am up to date with The Wire. I'm inclined to go with The Sopranos considering that it has finished.

Re: Which TV boxset should I buy next?

All of the above are worth watching so work your way through!

Having watched nothing other than The Shield for that last few weeks (just finished season 5) I can completely recommend it, superb!!

The Sopranos is a must for anyone that considers themselves a fan of decent TV shows. One of my all time favorite shows!! Its HBO and they dont produce much rubbish to be fair!

Rescue Me is very different from the others but is also extremely good. One of the seasons dipped a little but very good, well written and funny.

I am in the minority in that I thought 24 was massively overrated, enjoyed the first season and slightly less so for the second but got bored after that.

I am actually jealous that you have all these great shows to experience, either way you have some fun ahead!

Re: Which TV boxset should I buy next?

I went with Rescue Me although it was a tough call with that and the Shield. Either way both are superb programmes.

Like the poster above I'm also in the minority who thinks 24 is completely overrated. I would recommend you try Sleeper Cell which is similar in the sense that it deals with terrorism. The major difference is the quality of writing, acting and actual three dimensional characters including the "bad guys". Another suggestion instead of watching 24 is a movie called Spartan starring Val Kilmer written by David Mamet.

LOL.... Cheers dazza. You did save me some typing there.

I voted for 24. Its an amazing show up till season 6 where it goes a bit pants. 24 Season 1-5 is one of my fav shows of all time.

Re: Which TV boxset should I buy next?

It was a choice of 1 from 3 for me - I went for The Shield.

The Sopranos - I just couldn't warm to it. If a station would like to repeat it from the start I'd give it another chance, but until then it gets a lukewarm reception from me.

The other 3 are all excellent though.

Re: Which TV boxset should I buy next?

i voted for 24, its still the Daddy of boxsets for action packed, clever and compulsive viewing. I got season 1 as Christmas present last year which hooked me in. Then i joined lovefilm and watched up to series three. Took a break then and watched Oz up to season 4 which is totally different but still brilliant. Just watched the first ep of 24 season 4 this evening.......enough talking i'm off to see ep 2 !!!

Go for 24, but if you want the best TV show ever I think Amazon.co.uk have the complete 7 series box of the West Wing for £74. Best TV Show Ever!

Re: Which TV boxset should I buy next?

Oooooh 24 has surged ahead! Thanks for all the comments and suggestions. I agree with you Skorne regarding The West Wing; just pips Six Feet Under to the top spot as far as my favourite shows go. I will eventually get all of them just wondered which to get first; is there a complete box set of The Sopranos out yet? Probably still be a month away yet as only just started Boston Legal and then Sports Night after that!

Re: Which TV boxset should I buy next?

I wouldn't get any of 'em - Criminal Minds or The Closer would get my vote above that lot anyday. Or, changing tac, I'd go for House, Bones or a wildcard of Xena: Warrior Princess. And not forgetting Deadwood, which is outstanding.

Regards

Mark

Re: Which TV boxset should I buy next?

I own 24 S1-5. I borrowed S6 from a friend to watch that. I would not buy it because Jack will just end up breaking your heart. And nobody likes a heart breaker. With much trepidation I am giving him one more chance

I also think Boston Legal is pretty hit and miss and edges on boring

I would recommend you check out 30 Rock - imo the best comedy on US television. I myself am toying with the idea of getting into The Sopranos

Dont toy, do!! I found this quite a slow burner but it really is one of the best 5 shows ever made!

I voted for The Sopranos because all 6 seasons are just fantastic, I own all of them and I definatly will watch them all again!

24 is also fantastic up until season 6. I bought S6 ages ago and I'm still struggling to get through it. I don't know if I'm even going to bother with season 7.
