couldn't believe terrestrial last night three of the five channels were transmitting in widescreen showing aliens special edition on 4, Sweet and Lowdown on 2 and Fled on 1.

For once a film on DTV with better pic quality than the DVD version (R1 in my case).

well they were all coming up as 14:9 zoom material so they weren't in the proper aspect ratio

EDIT: ignore me, you're right it was 16:9

I was getting a proper 16x9 image on my freeview Digital TV, but I agree, the picture quality was a damned sight better than the muddy, grainy R1 DVD.

It was the directors cut as well, I love those Auto-sentries!

I'm gonna be well annoyed if the PQ on the new Aliens re-release is really good..

Ah well there's a way around that!

I saw a bit of it via digital terrestrial (netgem I-player) connected via RGB scart to a Sony KE-32TS2 plasma, i was really suprised about the picture quality! so much so, that I played the DVD at the same time (also connected via RGB scart) and switched from live TV to the THX mastered R2 Special Edition DVD. I hate to admit (considering my DVD player is a lot more expensive than the freeview box) it but I was unable to see much difference, both looked like they came from the same transfer. Now thats what I call good quality TV, it can be done!

Maybe i'll compare the R1 and R2 some time because I didnt think the R2 was much different from Channel 4, same amount of grain. Perhaps the R1 is a worse transfer than R2...

Why the BBC decided to transmit the old 4:3 pan and scan grainy mess that was Indiana Jones on sunday night was another question.

You want to see my terrestrial broadcast on my TV. It'll make you think the DVD is a top quality transfer.
