4 Music replacing The Hits

I was noticing the recent freeview adverts for a "new" music channel called 4Music. It is to be a mixture of live music, videos and other programming. Fair enough, but I have discovered that it is taking over from The Hits, which leaves freeview without a music only music channel, which doesn't seem right to me.

Re: 4 Music replacing The Hits

isn't The Hits just wall to wall vids of mainly the cheesy/mainstream pop/soft rock/rnb from 1980s to the present and hardly anything that deviates from that, whereas 4 Music (if based on Ch4's music strand) is a bit bolder (the other programming will surely still be music-related, though please let it not be a revival of that sycophantic pretentious bore Jo Wiley's dire music chatshow)
... don't see what's wrong with that

- for me that's one less crap Freeview channel, and one new one that I might actually watch now and again

EDIT ... its not technically taking over, its just a rebranding and reboot of the same channel - "Freeview music channel gets public service branding from Channel 4 - The Hits, one of the two music channels on Freeview will be rebranded 4Music to indicate the partnership between Channel 4 and Bauer Media. The channel will change name fully on August 16 with the start of coverage of the V Festival."

Exclamation Re: 4 Music replacing The Hits

Hi,

I'm surprised they didn't rebrand it "4Play", just to be controversial and provocative!

Still, I won't be watching the channel anyway, so ultimately, it makes no difference to me whether it's "The Hits" (or another 4-letter anagram variation of that word ) or "4 Music".

And don't forget:
- "4Court", the channel for trucking enthusiasts/petrol-heads,
- "4Gone", the channel for the recently deceased (but not forgotten),
- "4Play", for theatre-lovers,
- "4Head", for slappers
- "4Skin", for excema-sufferers (or porn-fiends)

Re: 4 Music replacing The Hits

I for one am not looking forward to the change, having looked at the programming for the first few weeks on the EPG. One item that stood out to me on opening night was about 3 hours of 'Big Brother'....for crying out loud, its crap, its not music and why the hell do they have to show it wall to wall?

As for the Hits showing crap music all the time, I disagree. The fact that it is wall to wall vids is part of the appeal, I like to have it on in the background whilst I do other stuff, before turning over to watch 'proper' programmes...think I'll just listen to the radio when it changes to 4music. Why would I want to watch coverage of V festival or any concert? 9 times out of 10 the sound quality is rubbish on the TV or the artist isn't on form, the levels are out or whatever, and there is zero atmosphere unless you are there. I love festivals and concerts, but I can't sit through them on TV.

Re: 4 Music replacing The Hits

Oh dear! The picture quality on 4Music channel is truly awful. There's so much blocking, it looks like it was filmed on a mobile phone. I think they must be using an old encoder from 10 years ago. The Hits was not exactly 'BBC quality' but it was surely never like this.

& more to the point, why bother showing exactly the same footage as you're showing on E4 at the same frickin' time? They're both free channels. It's not like you're going to only have one or the other!

There is TMF but only about 70/80% is music though.
