Bleeping UK Gold!

Does anyone know why UK Gold have taken it upon themselves to bleep out the word "bastard" from shows such as Blackadder, Only Fools & Horses, Porridge, etc, even after 9pm?

(Sorry if I'm contravening the Forum rules, but it is a legitimate word. )

By bleeping it out, they are actually drawing attention to it!

On the other hand, they leave in lots of other words (such as various bodily functions) which I would have thought were more likely to offend.

Just wondering...

Re: Bleeping UK Gold!

Seems C4 are the opposite, on the simpsons on Tuesday bart said "******' loud and clear at 6pm.

Apparently one episode of OFAH is edited in this country only (so not on R1 dvd's) and cut down by quite a long time due to something like language/racism.

Re: Bleeping UK Gold!

If i had to hazard a guess as to why they were beeping the words, i would say its because the shows you mentioned are repeated before and after the water shed. It’s probably easier for UKG to edit the program once and keep showing the edited version through out the day

Just a thought

Yes, I agree.

But I'm still puzzled as to why "bastard" is bleeped out and the various other words (which would be automatically censored on the Forum) are left in!

Re: Bleeping UK Gold!

It really annoys me the way UK Gold ruin all these program, I've ranted about this in recent threads on here as well. In one Only Fools And Horses Episode they pixelated Del's hand when he stuck 2 fingers up at Rodney

Re: Bleeping UK Gold!

The other annoying thing is that you never get to see the whole program as they trim most of them down so they can cram more adverts in

Re: Bleeping UK Gold!

They also skip past two bits in only fools where Del says '****'. Now i'm not a racist and I reckon, neither are the people involved in Only fools, but why blank that out. They were funny moments spoilt by PC.

Oh and E4 do it a lot on re runs of friends as well.

My word did not circumvent the swear filter. The stars are a shortened version of the word Pakistani.

Re: Bleeping UK Gold!

Last week on the BBC PRIME channel the word P**i from Only Fools and Horses wasn't edited out which I found surprising as it is a bbc channel.

Re: Bleeping UK Gold!

If you watch the cricket from Australia, the commentators regularly use that word when Pakistan are playing.

It's just an abbreviation over there, in the same way that we say "aussies" when their cricket team is in the UK.

Oh what a tangled web...

I can't remember the original programs being after the watershed type programs though, it's not as if Porridge and OFAH were littered with nad words is it !

There are several words which were commonly used 20 to 30 years ago which are deemed unacceptable today.

But to get back to my original question, what's so wrong with "bastard" that UK Gold feel the need to bleep it?

Re: Bleeping UK Gold!

The simpsons can say crap at 6pm, and IMO if you can say crap you can say basically any word without going to the extremes.

Channel 4 do it all the time, especially with Futurama, cutting entire scenes which I see no reason to remove, usually they contain the jokes.
