Louis Theroux's African Hunting Holiday

Anyone see this?

Men and women that feel the need to drive round shooting defenseless wild animals for fun and thrills deserve to suffer a similar fate!

Re: Louis Theroux's African Hunting Holiday

I saw this and recoiled in utter horror that these morons get such pleasure from blasting an animal from 10 yards away and call it 'hunting'. Whilst I am strictly opposed to 'hunting', I do believe that a true hunter will track his prey over miles and days and educate himself to the preys terrains and habits..

but not thse yahoos...all they did was blast away and then call themselves 'hunters'.

what they actually are is blood lusty morons with no value for life...animal, or dare I say it, even human.

The point about hunting protecting endangered animals was also ablsoute and utter nonsense.

If we lived in a world where killing animals for food and other by products was a harsh reality in order to survuive, then fair enough....but leaving OHIO to kill animals in south africa is just a blood lust fuelled package holiday..they were not hunters.

This documentray must be a huge embarassment to decent Americans...trust me, they arn't all like that.

Re: Louis Theroux's African Hunting Holiday

I watched the 1st 10 minutes or so and knew it was going to make me very angry so stopped watching, I couldn't believe it when that little girl was being encouraged to shoot that 'wild' hog, what a start to that little girls life thinking it was ok to shoot an animal for fun. Also when that guy said that he could arrange to hunt Rhino's if someone was willing to pay the price, I thought Rhino's were a endangered species!!
Maybe we should arrange is for these 'hunters' to be put (unarmed) into an confined area with a hungry lion for a day & see how they like being hunted with the odds stacked against them.

Re: Louis Theroux's African Hunting Holiday

I enjoyed this program. It was not as infuriating as I thought it would be. Once you accept that there are people who want to have a trophy you realise that this is probably the best way to cater for their need. They get what they want, people make a living breeding specimens specifically for the purpose and the wild animals outside of these hunting enclosures are not poached and killed illegally. The system is working because populations in the wild are going up.

In the end I found myself agreeing with the park owner who was angry that Louis kept asking the same question.

Very enjoyable though less 'cringy' than his usual subjects.

I thought he was pretty even handed. Got to say I don't see what the fuss is about - what they are doing is no worse than regular farming, a lot better in many ways in fact since the game roams free for much of its life and does have a chance of escape. Also, it means that the species are preserved ... generally they would be wiped out by poaching or loss of habitat to conventional farming.

Anyone who has ever enjoyed a chicken sandwich or a chicken curry has no business criticising this as the overwhelming chances are that their meat was reared under appalling conditions had no freedom and a much shorter life.

Re: Louis Theroux's African Hunting Holiday

I Know someone who actually does this for a living taking rich americans to shoot a buffalo or whatever they wish from 10 feet and then spend the rest of the week bragging about it. In my eyes its not hunting but the animal doesn't go to waste. The head goes to the hunter for his trophy. The meat gets shared with the workers and trackers families who work on the game reserve and the skin get used or sold. I use dto go hunting with my Dad once a year and it was the highlight of my year. Spending days in the bush with a tracker looking for the right animal following it's spoor and then waiting for the right moment to shoot it. Then you would have to carry the carcass back several KM to the camp. afterwards sitting around a campfire with lions and jackal calling in the night with an ice cold beer and some fresh buck meat sizzling on the fire.

Re: Louis Theroux's African Hunting Holiday

I seen it to but dont think it can be considered hunting, everything is set up so it will be almost 100% that they will kill what they set out to kill, from the water holes that they fill up every week with the man made huts beside them so as they are easy targets, I think that if it was legal for them to farm humans in this way then the American guy would have had no problems in having a human trophy for his wall (if he could afford it).

Re: Louis Theroux's African Hunting Holiday

Just watched the program and it was .

"I will eat the meat but I won't kill the animal" thats what Louis said at the end. He should have added but I might give it ago

That old saying comes to mind. Be the hunter or be hunted.

Re: Louis Theroux's African Hunting Holiday

I really wanted to watch this as i think Louis shows are usually first class, however i didnt as i cant abide animal cruelty of any description.

If i was to watch this back on iplayer would i find it upsetting/offensive?

To be fair there was not really any animal cruelty and no images of a dying animal, they all seemed to be in good condition and well treated. The kills were all pretty clean and there would have been little suffering. You do see animals being skinned and butchered etc. but it's not particularly offensive.

Re: Louis Theroux's African Hunting Holiday

It was along the lines of "Don't you think it's cruel to hunt animals for sport?" but re-worded in many different ways.
