I'll wait 'til it comes round on Sky HD, it surely will. At least they'll show it in DD5.1 and logo free!!

It will, all HD channels broadcast 100% in Dolby Digital as default but not always DD5.1

BBC HD have an ongoing problem of transmitting stereo with a 5.1 flag, which they're doing with Toy Story 2. Only the left and right speakers are powered.

I'm watching this via a V+ box and I'm getting no sound at all on channel 108 (BBC HD), BBC1 (channel 101) is fine.

Grrr

Or centre. I know a lot of people moan about Sky and their £10 HD charge, but at least you get what you pay for!!

Re: Heads up: Toy Story 2 @ 5.40 on BBC HD today

I have found more stuff to watch on 4HD over the last few weeks.

And the movies I have watched were in 5.1 DD.

Superb picture. Bad sound.

Looks very bright mind.

What was interesting is that it shows how far Pixar have come. There are some brilliant textures there in HD but an awful lot of flat stuff as well.

Yeah , the ongoing problem is that they have nobody who knows how to or cares about the setup (or content) of BBC HD.

I was just thinking that (this is a reply to the post before last) - compared to say Cars or Ratatouille it looks quite dated, although the quality is still pretty stunning and the story's good too!

So did mine and I am sure I have rear channels playing??

I was all set to see the amp switch from DD intro announcement to Dolby Pro Logic II as it normally does. But it switched again to DD for the film and stayed in DD 5.1 EX no less.

10 times out of 10 my amp would switch to Pro Logic if it is stereo, it did with Monster Inc when they showed that nearly a year and a half back now.

I thought the film and sound were the best I have seen on BBC HD, immaculate

That's the whole point. For the last few weeks, BBC HD have been transmitting all programmes whether stereo or 5.1 with a DD 5.1 flag. So your amp will show DD5.1 even if the programme is only being broadcast in stereo.

Yesterday afternoon for example, High School Musical 2 was broadcast in DD5.1 with all speakers powered, but Toy Story 2 was only broadcast in stereo, even though our amps said DD5.1

Yep. Of course it's hard to texturise a plastic doll!

I think it's the backgrounds. In Cars and Ratatouille there's just so much going on.

Re: Heads up: Toy Story 2 @ 5.40 on BBC HD today

Thought this was a very poor effort by the BBC...and i'm not one for moaning about HD material normally.
In comparison, it only just the pipped the upscaled quality of the SD DVD and the DVD trounced all over it for sound...

Re: Heads up: Toy Story 2 @ 5.40 on BBC HD today

CGI especially older CGI which lacks the huge step up which is texture mapping we see now days and upscales fantastically, those movies are the content to demo an upscaling DVD or HD telly with (well before HD media became more common place in the case of the latter).

As for the audio well stereo should always be beaten by 5.1 or even a format with a dedicated center channel, no idea why the BBC seem to be having problems with a 5.1 flag feed only carrying 2.0 audio but lets hope they get it sorted.

Now owning the DVD I was more than happy with the HD picture, audio however was an issue and I couldn't be bothered to muck about with the amp or SKY box settings to try to improve it.
